We have received an invitation from the Augusta Dramatic Club to be present at the rendition of Sheri dan Knowles’ beautiful play, “ Thc- Wife,” on the night of the 10th of June. The troupe have secured the aid of Miss Gertrude Johnson, of Charleston, whose amateur acting has been pronounced as superior to many professionals. The Augusta Keening Neir.\ in speaking of the performance says: “Altogether the performance, promises well, and the people of Au gusta will show their appreciation of Augusta Amateurs by a crowded hearing of “ The Wife.” The costumes that the club have received are very fine, iu fact, are pronounced by those well acquainted with the stage business, the finest ever seen on the stage. The young gentlemen composing this organization of amateur dramatic stars have spared no pains or expense in fixing up for a grand affair, and the appearance made by litem on the evening of their appearance will justify a large and enthusiastic audi ence in attending. The scene of the play is laid in Mantua, and under the soft Italian skies these actors will do full justice to the play. A full cast lias been made up front the very fins material in the dub, and everybody is expect ing a regular treat. If the clnb would consent to ap* pear before the foot-lights in Athens we believe they would be welcomed by a crowded house. The whole were sent to Mr. Gustav Dambmann, of this city, to show results obtained from the use of his Arlington guano, the large stalks having been grown upon the portion of a field where that guano was used, while the smaller oame from a portion of the same field where no guano was used. Charley Cousins horse ran away, and ran into the buggy of Mr. Dean which standing at the horse rack on Broad street breaking tho same in several places. Mr. Dean’s horse is not one of the runaway kind; she is the mother of Chuck Anderson’s celebra ted horse, Beaumont, and gentle und kind aa a buggy and saddle animal. By way of parentheses, we may mention 'that the celebrated Sulphur House. A large number of ladies and gentlemen had gathered, on the balcony mid around the hotel to witness it, and from the interest manifested and beta offered the Judges, Capt. J. H. Rucker, Lieut J. H. Hull, Lieut, E. G. Potter, sad Sargent J. V. Sparks, of the Athens Guardi, were warned ’that the con test would be a clo*» one. ' At 5 p. m. Company A marched to the front, and the drill commenced 7 minutes, were devoted to the man- tufiof-arttiB, and after throe minutes’ rest, 30 minutes devoted to tho field movements. The marked efficiency of Company A showed that Capt. Lane had spared no efforts to bring his company up to that standard required to keep the banner which they had borne so long. And Com pany B fairly quaked in their shoes at tlie perfection of their wheels and Hue inovemet-ts. After 40 minutes’ exercise for Coihyany A, Company B came for ward, aud not confident, but hopeful through their confidence ;hi ' their Captain, C. L. We promised in our last issue that the meeting at Mr. Nobles would be, in no respect, inferior to any preceding one. The ladie3 who manage the Pro grammes evince decided ability in their arrangements- They deserve great credit for furnishing to our people an entertainment at once most pleasing, and at a merely nominal price. The recitation of Mr. llugaly evinced rare elocutionary powers, which have been arefully cultivated. “ Pretty as a picture,’ - by Miss Belle Harris, was a rare treat. We all know his ability to imitate the broken English of sever nationalities, but he excels in deliniatiny German character. Edwards, of Company B for that Company, presented Capt. Floyd with a beautiful gold-headed cane as a token of their respect and esteem. Next, Lieut. R. T. DuBose was introduced, and in a neat speech in behalf of Company A presented Capt. Lane with a magnificent gold-headed cane, which he received in a beautiful and touching address to his Company. The crowd then dispersed, and Messrs. C. W. Long & Co. did tha.
