SOUTHERN BANNER: JUNE 4, i8tS. ^gricitltaral the Cotton Seed ^Business’. .. . HINTS GROCERS. IT IS POOR POLICY For any retail merchant to MU.infierlor goods because He can make iporti money on them. of trying to find the cheapest W.’H. Oliver, of Jfewbrrn, N. C., writes to Maryland Farmer. ^‘*3 Tlie cotton need business is going to almost revolutionize the South. The seed is now used almost entirely for manure. After the oil is ]tressed and the cake fed to stock, the amount of manure will bp' vastly increased. A farmer now takes one ton of seed and puis it on two acres of land, and it will produce him a fair crop of cotton for jatte season, '-No effect after the first season. A farmer takes a ton of cotton seed to an oil press; he gets from it thirty-two gallons oil worth as it comes firm the press, in a crude stats forty cents a gallon, ($12,SO), lie also gets eight hundred pounds of oil cake. This tiake is very superior— far ahead oi linseed oil cake, it being sweet and palatable. This eight hundred pounds of cake fed, say to only one milch cow, \\ ill increase her milk immensely ; and the manure which he gets fiom this one cow will do him four-fold the good he would have gotten from the seed used as they now are. If one ton of seed will do this, see the increased amount of good that may he done with the l,GO0,9O0 tons of seed which are annually raised in the South.— This is sufficient to feed all the milch cows in this country. If the farmer may get $12,80 worth of oil, and eight hundred pounds of rich cake from a ton of cctlon seed, it is very desirable to make the exchange. All the cake that cottmi seed will make should be fed to Southern stock for their iiu-> provement; arid all their enriched droppings should be husbanded and carefully applied to fertilize the soil. that can be bought, he •elect THE BEST In __ We know of no business anywhere^ in the city or country, that would not sooner become permanently established, and in the long run pay better, by handling only fair and honest r - goods.
