VV:n< i At heart he might, have been all j q„ the following inornmg he said right, if his head and his will had j to j,j s w .;f fc ; only been all right; but these being J « j^u u „ have you any coffee i the wrong, the whole of the machine was i house?” going to the bad very fast, though I <• Yes, Tom.” She did not tell there were times when the heart felt something of its eld truthful yearn ings. Tom had lost his place as foreman in the great machine shop, and what money he had now earned came from odd job9 ot tinkering which he was able: to do here and there at private residences ; for Torn was a genius as well as a machinist, and when his head was steady enough, lie couhl mend a clock, «>r clean a watch as well as he could set up and regulate a steam engine—and i)pj (hi buffer than any. man ever employed. One day Tom had a job to mend a broken mowing machine, lor which he .received li\*e dollars, and on the following morning started out for his old haunt—the village tavern. lie knew his wife sadly needed the money, and that his t wo little chil dren were absolutely suffering from want of c'otbing. That morning he 1 eld a debate with the better part ot himself; but tins better part had be come very weak and shaky, and the demon of appetite carried the day. So away to the tavern Tom went, where, for two hours, lie felt the ex- hileraling effects of the alcoholic draught, and fancied himself happy, as he could laugh and sing; but, as usual, stupefaction followed and the man died out. He drank while he could stand, and then laid down in the corner, where his companions left him. It was late, almost midnight, when the landlord’s wife came into the bar room to see what kept her husband up, and she quickly saw Tom. “ Peter,” said she “ why, don’t you send that miserable Tom Darcey home ? He’s been hanging around here long enough.” Toasts stupefaction was not sound sleep, and the calling of his name aroused this senses to the keenest at tendon. He had an insane love for rum, but did not love the landlord. In other years, Peter Tindar and himself had loved and wooed the sweet maiden, Ellen Goss, and he had won her, leaving Peter to lake up wi h the -vinegary spinster who him that her >ispw had given it to her She was glad to hear him ask for coffee instead of the old, old cider. “ I wish you would make a cup, good and strong.” There was rcallv music in Tom’s then wii'M ..ver the hoard. *?>„ the following Monday morn ing, Tom Darcey assumed his place at the head ot the great machine shop, and those who thoroughly knew him hud no fear of his going back in the .-lougu ami joylessness. A few day- later Torn met Peter Tindar on the. stieet. “Eh, Tom, old 1m»v, what’s up?” “ I am up—light side up.’’ “ Yes—I sc--. H it I hope you haven't forsaken us, Tom ?” “ I have forsaken on’y the evil you have in store, Peter, 'flic fact is, I concluded my wife and little- rues had fed on husks long enough, BUGGIES, BUGGIES BUGGIES BUGGIES, Wf HATERS} Athens, Georgia, Manufucturer of aiul dealer in all kinds of voice, and the wife set about the and if there .was a kernal left in my work with a strange flutter m her head Tom drank two cups of the strong, fragrant coffee, and then went out— went out with a resolute slop, and waflTed straight to the great manu factory, where lie found Mr. Scott in the office. my had brought him the tavern, and he knew that the tapster ha of late gloated -over the misery of the wo man who had ouee discarded him. “ Why don’t you send him home?” demanded Mrs. Tindar, with r.n im patient stamp of t he foot. “ Hush, Betsy i He’s got money. Let him be, and he will be sure to spend it before he g>*es home. I’ll It: vc tlie kern •! of the uut, and his wife may have the husk !’’ With a sniff and a snap Betsy turned away, and shortly after Tom Darcey lifted himself upon his elbow. u Ah, Tom, fire you a \ake ?’’ 44 Yes." “ Then reuse up and have a lmt glass.” u No, Peter,' I won’t drink any more to-night.” 44 It won’t hurt you, Tom -ji t a glass.” “I know it won’t,” said Tom, but toning up his coat, by the only button left. “ I know it jj^in’t.” And with this he went -out into the chilly air of the night. When he got away from the shadow of the tavern, he stopped and hooked up at the stars, and then he looked down upon the earth. 44 Ah,’’ lie muttered, grinding his heel in the gravel, “ Pei.er Tindar is taking the kernel and leaving poor Ellen the husk, and I am helping him to do it, I am robbing my wife of joy, robbing my children of honor and comfort, robbing myself of love and life—just that Peter Tindar may have the kernel and Ellen the husk ! We’ll see!” It was a revolution to the man. The tavern keeper’s brief speech, meant not for bin cars, had come “Mr. Scot!, I want to learn trade over again.” 44 Eli, Tom ! Wi.at do you mean ?” “ I mean that it’s Tom Darcey, come back to the old place asking forgiveness for the past, and hoping to do better in the future.” 44 Tom !’’ cried the manufacturer, starling forward and grasping his hand, 44 are you in earnest? Is it really the old Tom ?” “ It’s what’s left of him, sir; and we’ll have him whole ami strong verv so n if you’ll only set him at work.” “ Work ! Aye, Tom, and bless you, too! There is an engine l<» lie i s»-l up ami tested to-day. Come with me.’’ Tom’s hands were weak and un steady, hi t his brain was clear, and with his skillful supervision tlie en gine was set lip ami tested, but it was not perfect. There were mis takes which he had to correct, and it was late in the evening when the work was complete. 44 How is now, Tom ?” asked Mr. Scott, as lie eame into the testing ln-use ami found tin- workmen rea ’y to depart. “ She’s all right, sir. Yon may give your warrant without tear.” “ God bless you, Torn ! Y«u don’t know how like sweet music the old voice sounds Will you take your place again?” “Wait till Monday morning, sir. It you will offer it to ulC then, I will take it.’’ * • At the little cottage Ellen Dareey’s fluttering heart was sinking That morning, after Tom had gone, slie had iound a t wo dollar hill :in her coffee cup. She had be- n out and bought tea ami sugar and flour and butter, and a bit of tender steak; ami all day long a ra • of light had been dancing and skimming before her—a ray from the blessed light ol other days. With prayer and hoye she s.-t out the tea-table ajtd waited, hut the sun went down, and no Tom came. Eight o’clock—and almost nine. Oh, wits it but a.thl^ glimmer idler all? t'i Hark! The old step! strong, eager for home.
