Testing lor a Distant Earth
quake.
Prof. Richard Owen, of Blooming
ton, Indiana, is engaged in a series of
experiments on the magnetic currents
of the earth in that locality. Daily
observations are taken of the peitur-
bations of the magnetic currents of
both the earth and air, and these are
kept on record. The news of a
severe earthquake at Puerto Cabello,
extending to Caracas, on the night
of April 12, having come to hand,
Prof. Owen consulted his record for
that day and nearest hour, and
found that ’ the magnetic flow from
S. S. E. to N. N. W. was then more
variable than on any former observed
occasion. This indicates a magnetic
storm at that time in the earth’s
crust, having a direction along a line
from the locality of the earthquake to
the place of observation in Indiana,
a distance of 1,600 miles. There
was no unusual disturbance of the
galvanometer on April 12 in other
currents than the one armed. The
needle settled to its place readily
with currents from E. to W. and
from S. E. to N. W. The coinci
dence of the disturbance with the
earthquake in ti ne and direction is
not conclusive evidence of a connec
tion, but it is certainly noteworthy.
Prof. Owen has been able to predict
storms from 24 to 48 hours before
their arrival, by means of his mag
netic observations. The range of
deflection of the galvanometer which
is observed in the atmosphere cur
rents, is from 6 degrees or 7 degrees
in quiet weather to 25 degrees or 36
degrees in storm. In the earth cur
rents, when a storm is approaching,
the needle settles for a few moments
only in any given deflection, and
keeps up a rapid oscillation for the
most part through 56 degrees to 60
degrees of arc. The apparatus for
obtaining the direction of the earth
currents consists in part of an under
ground iron tank, and eight iron
rods. The rods are driven six feet
into the ground; at distances of 75 to
100 feet from the tank, and disposed
at the compass points from the tank
as a center. When one wire leading
from the tank and another from a
rod, meet in a galvanometer, the
earth current is indicated in respect
to a given direction. The prevailing
current at the locality is S. E to N.
W. It is a resultant of comparative
ly weak currents front E. to W. that
give a deflection of 8 degrees to 12
degrees, and of currents from S. S.
E to N. N. W. which usually give
20 degrees to 26 degrees deflection.

A Sad Romance.
The determination of Gen. Sher
man’s son, Thomas Ewing Sherman,
to become a priest revives the roman
tic story of the life and love of one of
Gen. Scott’s daughters. As the story-
goes, this daughter fell deeply in
love with a member of one of the for
eign legations. The attachment was
reciprogated, but the match was so.

She cared nothing for the world after
that, and very soon was received as a
nun in the Georgetown Convent.
Her lover returned to h»s native
country, and was soon enrolled in
the priesthood of the Catholh-
Church.
In subsequent years he was order
ed to Georgetown College, and took
his turn in hearing the confessions of
the nuns at the convent. On one of
these occasions Miss Scott, knelt in
the confessional to her former lover,
and under such circumstances a rec
ognition took place. She fainted,
went into a rapid decline, and soon
after died, and lie left the country
never agaiu to return. So a Wash
