But upon the medical profession be has conferred the greatest boon. We know with a tew ounces of chloroform or ether we can ssy to pain—“thus far shalt thou come and no farther.” We are its absolute master. We owe this boon to Dr. Crawford W. Long. This reeds no argument. The gifted Simms, with uncontrovertible facts, cheerfully accords to him the honor ot being the first who “intentionally produced anesthesia.’’ To testify to the world that we are uot’ignoraut—tbqt his claims are just —that we do feel deeply the great debt of gratitude we owe to our broth er who has gone before us—that we rcalizu that his discovery was one of unequaled splendor—it becomes the physicians of his native State to attest their appreciation of his boon an 1 memory, in some substantial manner, so that those who come after us may name us with one who was so great a benefactor. In Boston there stands a monument to the discoverer of Anes thesis: but no name is perpetuated on its marble surface. To the Medical Fiaternity of Geor gia this opportunity is givin of testi fying to the world their appreciation of this medical discovery, second only to vaccination by erecting a monu ment over the remains of Dr. Craw ford W. Long. I would Imre this tribute, just to him and noble to the profession, par ticipated in by each physician. Not through any assoointio.i, but as an individual recognition of the greatness of the discovery, anil the debt of gratitude we owe. 1 only suggest, in conclusion, thatcon- tributions should be sent to Dr. II.
