B SOUTHERN BANNER: SEPTEMBER 17, 1878. PriMiui Life Conducive Longevity. to Tlit' above heading is by no means used :is an encouragement to those who are desirous of longevity to seek prison life. But as the jails and prison houses throughout our country (with perhaps a few exceptions,) by no means serve as evidences of our professed high order of civilisation, hut rather go to provo a cruel and inhumane treatment of the evil-doers who are so unfortunate as to be their occupants, we use it that the atten tion of the public, and especially of the public authorities throughout the land may the more certainly be at tracted to the all-important matter of proper care and construction of our public prisons. Prison house statistics in this coun try go to show that incarceration within their walls tends , more to shorten than lengthen life when just the reverse should be true. During the existence of scourge and pesti- h nee well conducted prisons are generally, if not always, exempt from these diseases. Not so in our country, hut on the contrary our prison houses are usually among the first, most se verely and fatally attacked places in the community where these maladies I revail. It was our mission a few years siucc to exaraiue somewhat into the jails of our parti'ular section of cc uutry and we are sorry to chron icle the fact, that for the want of proper ventilation and general sani tary care and precaution in and about these places, they were more places of inhuman and barbarian infliction, than for just and humane exercise of the law. This is all cruel and wrong, ■a d.should command the constant and corrective attention of our pub lic functionaries. Prisoners, though < \ il-docrs and violatiors of the law, nevertheless they are certainly enti tled to just, humane, and healthful consideration at the hands of both county and State authorities. We irust that a much needed reform in the cure and protection of the unfor tunate inmates of our jails and pris ons shal' soon mark an advanced step in our Southern civilization. That the importance of this reform may the more fully be seen and rec ognized we append the following from the Sanitary Hetqttirer : “ Any one reading the sentence of some notorious criminal to a term of years in Sing Sing or Auburn will naturally leel pity for the evil-doer. But if it was known that a man or woinan consigned to a well kept pris on is actually benefited in point of health, we would not lament their lot to such degree. In point of fact the records of the best English itentiaries show that a person’s chan ces of life are nearly double what they would be in a state of freedom. Notwithstanding that two-thirds of the inmates enter such institutions with diseases upon them, often in ad' vanned stages, yet as a result of pure air, cleanliness and a well regulated diet, prisons are made seats of health. In those of Scotland, which arc mod els of good management, the death rate is only 3 in 1,000. Contrast this with the death rate of 17 per 1,000 in the British army or with the aver age rate of 20 per 1,000 in other oc cupations, and it will be seen what marvellous results may be obtained by proper sanitary regulation. A high medical authority declares that the Perth Prison, in Scotland, is appear- ently the healthiest place in the world. The government inspector, who visited it six times annually for thirteen years, rarely fonnd more Ilian two among 750 inmates in the infirmary, While once or twice there was no one. Epidemics rage around such institutions, but do not enter them, and we can well understand the expression of surgeons regarding patients in their private practice, “ li l could only have that case.in prison 1 could save the life.’’ Interesting Anecdoteol‘ Rev Joseph Stiles, D. D. In a pleasant call upon Thomas II Harden, Esq., of Savannah, a great admirer and life long friend of Dr. Stiles, he related an incident in the career of that eminent divine which will provoke a smile even from our good Baptist brethren. He had been invited to attend a protracted meeting in one of their churches, and laborei with all the fervor and eloquence of his great heart, and by God’s grace and the help of the other ministers most successfully. The Sabbath came, and with it a glorious ingathering of newly converted precious souls who were all immersed, after which the Lord’s supper was celebrated. ' Unfortunately tbe rules of the church excluded the doctor from par-, ticipatiog in that solemn feast, and he sat a part in silence. When the elements had beetrdis- pensed and the services were over, to the astonishment of the congregation, Doctor Stiles arose, and approached the communion table, exclaimed, “ Truth, Lord, yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their master’s fable.” ' He then advanced and partook of the bread and wine that stood before him. Yet it is not recorded that any one objected or felt hurt, or that the doctor himself took the least exception to i ho conduct of those who only act ed i.i consistence with their faith and practice. ■ B it it was a unique incident worthy of preservation and strongly charac teristic of the salient character of Dr. Stiles, who ever lived in Christian charity with ell denominations.—H. H. J,, in the Macon Telegraph. If reports are true would it not have been well for the Hon. Rev. H. P. Bell to have emulated the example of the noblo divine above mentioned, officiated .at the Baptist meeting at. Macedonia, Towns coun ty, last Julyfc 1 ’ But iustead. ***♦*.
