method is tbo handbill system, by
which the hotels are daily inundated.
Daring the business season one boy
after another will go the rounds, and
in this way an attempt is made to
obtain trado. Of these, however,
the greater part are wasted, since the
wmier generally picks them up and
throws them into the street, and the
next day a fresh inundation takes
place. Experience has clearly dem
onstrated that the most efficient
method of advertising is found in the
judioious use of the newspaper col
umns. The ground on which news
paper advertising, as a system, b
based is human confidence, ance we
cannot avoid believing that which we
constantly read.
This confidence is sometimes
abused, but still it is evident thst a
good advertisement will, if sufficient
ly repeated, carry popular opinion.
Men who advertise with the greatest
persistency eventually reach sutcess.
Thera is a military principle involved
in thb method, siuce the article ad
vertised should be pressed on the
public by repeated assaults. The
correct, view, which experience
brings to each man, is that advertis
ing should be included in the general
estimate of expenses, as regularly ns
store rent, clerk hire and insurance.
It is often sail a good stand at a high
rent is better than a poor one, rent
free. Well, advertising brings a man
before the public in a way that
makes any ‘stand’ good. The best
Rtaud you can liave is to be in the

Under the above heading the Au

the Medical Department of the Uni

the services of Dr. Hickman to that
Institution. Wc are also glad that
this step has lieen taken to make the
Institution truly a Medical Universi

It should lie a matter of great pride
that it has remained for Augusta to
produce the first distinguished laryn-

one of the only two scientific occuliats,

It is indeed a matter of congratula'
tion to the medical department of the
University of Georgia in having se
cured the servioes of Dr. Hickman in
these special departmnnts, as his im
mense experience and superb advan
tages greatly qualify him for the po
sition he so valuably and enthusias
tically holds. But better still, in all
his glory, the poor as well as the rich
are enabled to reap tbe benefit of his
years of labor, as every day, at 12
o’clock, an hoar or two is devoted to
their entire attention, allowing the
great and liberal heart of which we
all know him to be possessed.
