Dr. C. \V. Slcim-n* gave at a recent

scri|iti(iu of i-ninr . xpcrimenU upon
the above subject, which havr ‘>a—.
conducted during tbeln-t two inooth*
at his hntt-e at Sherwood, and < xl-ii»»
ited specimens. Tlie tucthral pursn-.-i
was to plant quick-growing
plants - such as mustard, carrots.
-Swedes, beans, cucumbers and m-hras
- in puts and these pot3 were divid' d
into tiiur grotli a, one of which-eras
kept emiiely in the <!ark, one was ex-
p-’sed to ihe inti.ioi ce of the electric
light ouly, and one to daylight and
eli ctrio light in succession. The
electric light was applied for s x hours
each evenio.—from 5 to 11—and the
plants wore then left in darkness dur
ing the remainder of the night. The
general result was that the plants kept
entirely iu the dark soon died, thass
exposed to the electric light only ar to
daylight, only throve about equally,
and those exposed to both day aad
electric light throve far better than
either, tlur-specimens of mustard and
carrots exhibited to tlie society show*
ing this difference in a very remarka
ble way. Dr. Siemens only consider*
himself as yet on the threshold of tlta
investigation, bat thinks the experts
ments already made are suffitienl to
justify tbe following conclusions:
First—Thnl electric light is efficacious
in producing chloropltyl in the leaves
of plants, and in promoting growth.
Second—That an electric center of
light equal to 1.400 candles placed at
a distance of two met> rs trom growing
plants appeared to be equal in effect
to average daylight at this season of
tho year; but that more economical
effect* can be obtained by more pow
erful light centers. Third—That the
carbonic acid and nitrogenous coeds
pounds generated in dimitratift quan
tities in the electric are prod nee no
sensible deleterious effects upon plants
inclosed in tbe same space. Fourth—
That plauts do uot appear to require a
period of rest during tbe twenty-four
hours ot tbe day, lint make inersosed
and vigorous progress if subjected
during day lime to sunlight and dating
tbe niedtt to electrio light. Fifth—
That the radiation ot heat fsom pow
erful electric arcs can be ra-de availa
ble to counteract the effect of night
frost, and is likely to promote the
setting and ripening of fruit in the
open air. 6. That while under the
influence of electric light plants can
sustain increased stove heat without
collapsing, a circumstance favorable
to forcing by electric light. 'T. That
the expense of electro-horticulture de
pends mainly on the cost of raechani-
csil energy, and is very moderate
where natural sources of such energy,
such as waterfalls, can be made avail
able. The paper gave rise to a highly
interesting discussion, iu which it was
pointed out that the evidence afforded
ot the p-iictical identity, as regards veg
etation, of solar and electric light, bw>
sides the probability that it would ba
turned to immediate account by hor
ticulturists, would afford great facili
ties Ibr the scientific investigation at
the iiifluenou exerted by light, as com
ps red with other sgencic*, iu ^promot
ing tlie formation of the active 'prin
ciples or most valuable constituents of
phuit8, such as the qufnme of the
cinchot a bark, tho glutea bt wheat,
and so forth. Before concluding hia
oltaervntions Dr. Siemens placed a pal
of budding tulips in-the full brightness
of an electrio lamp in the tceetisz-
room, and in about forty minute* the
buds had expanded into full bloom.
