Tlie weight of the brain has often

confirmation obtained by investiga

a source of power supplied to the
muscles, and we are ignorant to what

system or the size of the body may in
fluence that of the brain. We know
that a muscle grows by judicious ex
ercise; why, then, should not the
bran, supplying it with the nerve force
necessary tor its increased duties, en
large pari passu f It may be doubt
ful whelher we can prove that this is
so. It is, I think, certain that we
cannot prove that it is not so. Dr.
LeBon, in a work to which I shall re
fer again, has decided that the height
of a person has an effect, though a very
slight one, on the size of the brain.
He found that the influence of the
weight ot the body is greater, but by
no means sufficient to account fir the
variations of the brain. Another dis
turbing element is age. It has been
estimated that after a rather umertain
date, say lbrty-tivc years, the brain
gradually dwindles. Again, may not
some wasting diseases preceding death
cause a shrinking of the organ ;

Anatomists give very discordant
directions for determining the sex ol
skulls. In a great mauyeas s it can
not be determined. The female sknll,
as a rule, is smaller than the male,
and, moreover, the jaws and prmis

consequently the brain case, though
smaller than in man, is larger in pro

while the skulls cf male Parisians are

A TEXAS STORY.
Little Ruck (Ark.) Gazette.
Texas preachersfare said lo be very
eccentric, aud their mild unnatural-
ness has given rise to a great many
remarks and a few stories. The fol
lowing naaralive was told us confi
dentially by a slanderer ;
A minister arose belore a large
audience, took liis text and began
preaching. A brisk tiring ot pistols
began on the outside of thu church.
•Brother Deacon,’ said the minister,
•I believe those fellows are casting
insinuations at me. In fact, I am very
nearly convinced,’ he continued, as a
ptecq of plastering fell from tho wall
close to his head.
‘I think, parson, that it refers to
some one else,’ replied the deacon.
The minister raised a tumbler of
water, and was in the act of applying
his lips,* when the glass fell, shattered
by a shot.
‘This is an innuendo no longer,’ said
the minister, wiping the water from
his vest ‘This is w hat 1 term an tin-
mistukablo thrust. The congregation
will please sing while I go out and
investigate this matter. Is there an
other preacher in life house?’
. ‘Yes,’said a man, throwing down a
stick which lie had been whittling,
arising and pulling at the waist ot his
pants like a man who had just straight
ened up alter setting out a row of to
bacco across a broad field.
•Got on an extra ?”
‘Y'es.’
‘Uolimber ’
‘The whittling preacher handed
or«r a large Remington pistol, which
dm insulted preacher'took and, draw
ing one from his belt, started out.
After going out there was an immedi
ate improvement iu the firing business.
It was decidedly more lifelike, inso
much that the deacons sat working
their fingers. After awhile the min
ister returned, and plaiting an ear and
the nostril and a half of anose on tlie
pulpit, remarked : ‘He that hath earn
to hear, lei him behave himself The
sermon then proceeded without in
terruption.
