TAX COLLECTOR.
We have by committee examined
th« books of H. H. Linton, Tax-
Collector and find them correct.
We also find that he has settled in
full with the proper officers for
State and county texes for
the year 1879.
The State insolvent list having
been $324,14 and the county in-
solvert list 34.14, which we are
assured is che smallest insolvent
list ever allowed a Tax collector
in Claika county. Of this amount,
he has since collected $10.00 and
has colleptjai ,$2Z.3QU9f .
whose names were not on Digest.
Mr. Linton only went into
office alwmt tile 2l)ih of October,
and his reports prove that he is in
deed a most efficient officer, and
we take pleasure in calling the
public attention to this fact.

F. II. LUCAS, LATE tax-collector.
We find since November 'Perm

during tlie present Term he has in
compliance with the decission of
this Grand Jury paid over SOQ 00

tax receiver.
We have examined the bonks of
Tax Receiver and find them cor
rect and properly kept.
CORONER.
We have examined the books of
W. F. Hood, Coroner, .v. find
that since the last term of this
court he has summoned Juries of
Inquest i t three cases of drowning
and oue where the charge was mur
der aud we also find his book
properly kept.
PAOPKK PARR.
We have by committee examin
ed the books of John R. Tuck,
Superintendent of Panper Farm,
and find them correct. We also
find that since November Court
three convicts have been sent to
the Farm, to wit; Milly John
son for six months, from 17th of
December, 1S79, Robert Parks for
twelve months, from 16th ot
March, lS80and Harry Matthews
for twelve months, from 3rd May,
1880. The expenses of the Farm
for the same time, have been
302.03. The crepe for the pres
ent year, consist of 15 acres in corn,
45 acres in cotton, 14 acres in oats,
10 acres of which is ou rented
laud for which 13 1-4 lbs. ol lint
cotton is to be paid. Crops are all
in excellent condition aud the
tools and implements in good or
der ami well cared for.
We find that thete was sold
front the Farm of last year’s crop,
$690 20 ami that there is an ampto
supply of |irnveiider to complete
the ptesent crop, except that prob
ably 15 or 20 bushels of com may
have to be bought,.
A* it is probable that the num
ber of convicts will be increased,
we recommend that a suitable
building ot logs be erected in the
wood land in the rear part of the
Farm to insure their safe keeping.
Said building to be a dottbU cabin
containing three rooms, with only
one outside door, in the centre
room, and the doors ol each of. the
end rooms opening into the ceutre
loom.
We would further recommend,
that the building at present on
the place bo appropriated entirely
ined the public buildings, mid
find that the Court House is in
first rate condition, with tho
exception of a small portion of
plastering Laving fallen off in the
upper passttge. The jail is ill
good condition, except u leak
from the water pipes. We
recominetid that these detects he
remedied at once, and that two
gas lamps be placed ou the wall i
around the jail. We would fins
ther recommend that the Ordinary
have a cistern to hold 20,000
gallons, dug on the highest ground
S raeticable in rear of Court
louse, and furthermore with nec
essary piping to carry tho water
to the jail and Sheriff's house. We
reccouiuieud that the Ordinary
have Rome tubs placed near the
well, in order that those in attens
dance on court may water their
horses. We further recommend
that the fences and gates enclosi
ing the Court House, be kept in
good order. That the dead
limbs be removed fiom tbe trees,
aud that uo cuttle or horses l>e
allowed in the enclosure, except
in that part of the ground set
apart for that purpose. Also that
the Ordinary have suitable book
cases made for holding the books
of the Clerk ot the Superior
court, and that a suitable table be
put in the Grand jury room and
a desk in which the papers of the
jury may he safely kept.
MISCELLANEOUS PRESENTMENTS.
We recommend that tho Ordi
nary levy not less than 100 per
cent on the State taxes of thL
year for county purposes, to be
divided by him iuto specific per
cent, as in his judgment he may
deem necessary to meet the ditF-
erent purposes for which by law,
county taxes aro required to be
levied.
It has come to the knowledge
of the Graua jury, that n number
of Deeds are unrecotded, in eons
sequence of tho excessive char
ges mado for performing that du
ty. The law allowing only 50cts
und 15cts. for each additional 100
words, in tteeess of 300 words.
W e recommend that the same be
complied with.
We recommend that our Rep
resentative use his influence to
havo a law passed by tbe next
Legislature, requiring tbe costs
in all cases to bo deposited by
Plaintiff before tbe case is entered
ou tbe docket, except capital
cases where the life or liberty ot
the person is involved.
We most earnestly recommend
that our fellow citizens instead of
resorting to the courts to settle
their difficulties and misuitder*
stan^jngs have them arbitrated
ana settled by their neighbors,
thereby saving the expense ot a
