The Ladies’Garden Club excels all
others when it come? to making a love
ly display of flowers and vegetables.
And its fall exhibit this year is going
to surpass all former exhibits in every
respeot, for the ladies believe in going
forward and not backward.
They have made great preparations
to make this display one of great merit
and worth, and accordingly next Tues
day afternoon at two o’clock will open
tbe doors at the V. M. C. A. Hall to
admit the people to the loveliest sight
in the way of flower exhibits ever seen
in Athens.
The exhibition will continue for tbe
public inspection all day Wednesday
and Thursday in addition to the open-
irg day and will also be open at night.
The ladies have prepared to serve all
kinds of delicious refreshments and
those attending will have a nice time
in this respect. Oysters, salads, and in
fact all the richest delicacies will be
served.
There will be a baby show on Thurs
day at noon and a handsome rize of
fered for the loveliest baby exhibited.
This will attraot a large number on that
day and the little tots will be in their
glory.
The premium list this year is a splen
did one and the ladies deserve great
credit for getting it up, as they them
selves gave a large portion of the pre
miums. The contests lor the different
premiums will be a spirited one.
Among the outside exhibitors will he
Mr. Jackson of Gainesville, who will
exhibit chrysanthemums and roses and
Mr. Berokmana of Augusta, who will ex
hibit rosea. These exhibits will bo of
rare beauty.
The exhibit will lw? uuimy one u
chrysanthemums although olhst flov
era will be there in great profusion.
The vegetable displays will also he
well worth seeing.
The ladies have gathered together a
collection of chrysanthemums not ex
celled even by the exhibit at the North-
eaat Georgia Pair some years since or
at their own exhibit last year. The
T. M. C. A. hall will be a wilderness
of flowers.
The exhibit will not be merely for
show or to attract the attention of
pleasure seekers. Its main objeot is
for instruction and in order to stimu
late a desire on the part of the ladies to
cultivate flowers and vegetables in the
best and most scientific way in order
to gain the richest results.

We have beard of two or three cases
in the vicinity of Athens, of the evil
♦ffeots of cigarette smoking, and one r f
these cases we le»rn is very low. It is
very strange that young men will fol
low this pernicious habit, when so many
warnings are given of persons being
ruirnd by falling into tae habit. Some
of our best physicians declare th&:
cigarettes are very poisonous, and war \
the people against using them.
Tbe sexton at the cemetery, Mr W.
A. England, informs ns that tbe trus
tees have ordered that no children be
allowed in the cemetery, unless sent
by parents with flowers, or are accom
panied by their parents or other grown
people. This is done because of the
oomplaints that have been so frrqu«nt-

flowers from graves and other deseora-
