Four ladies went out fishing not fsr
from the Classic City theoP-er day .and
were having a good time One of the
party lost her footing and fell into the
jriver, and a oompanfon quiokly ran t »

it was about all they could do to save
the first one from drowning. The
whole party was almost frightened to
death, and it is not thought that any
of them will go fishing again soon

The Place Where President Cleveland
Sent Mr. Bayard. \
A few days ago a group of the boyr
were talking when one of the company
propound d the query: “Where is St
Jametf” Tber« was a lull in the con
versation when'the tall man said: “You
have got this orowd, and no one here
knows where St. James is ” The first
speaker then remarked, “I think it is
in the Bermuda Islands.”
There was another pause, when th»
tollman again said: “No use asking
such questions in this crowd, but why
.are you so interested ip St. James?”
“Because,” replied the other, “Mr.
Cleveland has appointed Mr Bayard
minister to the penitentiary cjun
of St. James, and I simply desired to
row where the Island is.”

Horticulture In Texas.
Perhaps no other state in the Union
has such a variety of rich soils and of
fer# such good opportunities to the hor
ticulturist and farmer as Texas. The
fruit of the tropics grows to perfection
on the coast. The soil of the coast is
very well suited to the pear. In north
ern as well as southern Texas it is raised
to perfection. The varieties that are
most successful are the KieffeT, which
grows well iu all parts of the south, the
Duchess, Bartlett, La Conte, Garber.
Early Harvest and Hqyrell. The Texaa
State Horticultural society, which meets
annually, ranks with any of the older
societies of other states.
