The steamship from St Minbaeig f or
Beattie has passed up the sound with
more than a ton of solid gold on board
and 68 passengers. In the captain’s
cabin are three chests and a large safe
filled with the precious nuggets. The
metal Is worth nearly |700,000 and the
most of it was taken out of the ground
in less than three months of last win
ter, and in size, the nuggets range from
tfae sise of a pea to a' guinea egg. Of
the 68 miners aboard hardly a man has
less than $7,000, and one or two have
more than $100,000 in yellow nuggets.
One peculiar feature noticed is that
tiie big strikes were mode by “tender-

miners an suffering indescribable hard

northwest territory, and' have only a
few thousand dollars to show for their

Straw hats have appeared again on all

complaint that the weather is worse
than that of the tropios, although the
mercury has not yet gone above 75.
Visiting Americans are luxuriating in
this temperature and are praising Lon
don as a summer resort, greatly to the
astonishment of the resident Londoners.
In spite of the beautiful weather and
the very exciting contests. Henley has
been almost a failure this season, as
compared with other years. The ohlef
reason probably is the rebellion which
has come at last against the extortion
practiced at Henley by the hotel keep
ers, cabmen and boatmen. This class
of gentry has suffered very much in the
same way as the jubilee speculators.
Comparatively few Americans were
to be seen nmong the spectators of the
regatta. Hut a number of Harvard men,

ing handsomely, have been mnch in

The whole program of naval man-
euv 'rs came to a ludicrous fiasco owing
to a misunderstanding of the orders of
the admiralty. The fleet was divided
Into two parts, one commanded by Ad
miral Fellows. Ha had iustrnotlons to
steam out of Blackhead bay, to await a
declaration of war and then endeavor
to return to the bay without being in
tercepted by the other division. When
still ill) miles from the rendezvous, a
cruiser overtook Admiral Fellows and
told him that war had beau declared;
whereupon ho turned about, and meet
ing no enemy, entered the bay and tel
egraphed to the admiralty “the war is
ever.” After several hoars’ silence, the
admiralty sent in a curt order to go to a
rendezvous zOO miles west. This he did
and be turned about again.
As ho approached Blackhead bay last
Sunday morning the enemy appeared
and cleared for action. Tpe flagship
Majestic opened fire, but Admiral Fel
lows did not respond. On the contrary,
lie signalled that he had already oa -
turd Ireland, that ohnroh sorvioe was
being bold in the various ships of his
division and that he must decline to
light. The admiralty was furious and
it will be a long time before the last is
heard of this fiasco in naval circles.

Her decision to leave Wiudsor Castle is
a great relief to the royal family, who
fear that she is doing too mnch for her
strength. Every day of the week shq

and dinners. When she received the
bishops the other day, it was her own
suggestion that a number should be
personally presented to her. To Bishop
Whipple and Bishop Potter, she said:
“1 am very glad to see you here.”
On Thursday the queen received a
deputation of nonconformists, headed
by Dr. Joseph Parker, the minister of
the City temple, and Dr. Monroe Gib-
sou, formerly of Chicago and Toronto.
Her majesty received them with even
more ceremony than she did the Epis

Cleveland, July 17.—While local op-

district have agreed to, or will agree to
sign, the true uniformity scale, they
have little or no faith that the efforts of
wbitratore will be successful
Mr. Thomas Young, manager for M.
A. Hanna & Oa, acting on the sugges

importuned to use his good offices by
Pittsburg operators, visited the afore
mentioned operators to sound them on
the true uniformity proposition. He
found them all perfectly willing to
agree to it, bat most of them, like him-
self, have given their oonsent with the
conviction that the arbitration will
oome to naught.
They claim that DeArmitt will kiok

now a unit in the belief that the West
Virginia miners will go out in a day or
two.
