those figures have long since been passed.
Up to date the receipts have reached
86,000 bales, and a low estimate for the
remaining portion of the cotton year is
11,000 bales, making the total receipts
for the season 97,000 bales.
It may be that the receipts for the bal
ance of the season will be more than
11,000 bales and that the total receipts
may pass the one hundred thousand
mark. •
The largest receipts for Athens previ
ous to this year ran np as high as 92,000
bales. This year’s receipts will go sev
eral thousand beyond those figures.

make it to the interest of the farmers of

Atlanta, Ga., Jan. 26.—The Exposi-1

Jackson Superior court will be quite
interesting week after next.
When the criminal docket is called
there will be two sensational murder
cases to be tried.
One is the case against against Alex
Harville, a prominet young farmer liv
ing near Winder.
Some time since James Wright was
assassinated on the streets of Winder.
He had been to the commencement ex
ercises at Winder Academy and had
sung in the choir, it being the Sabbath
day.
As he returned to his home he was
shot down and his assassin escaped. In
few hours Harville was imprisoned,
and the charge of murder stoood against
him. He was connected with the crime
the gror d that he was a jealous
rival of Wngnt’s.
Harville will be defended by Hon. R.
Russell and Hon. Thos. E. Watson.
The state will be represented by Acting
Solicitor-General Henry C. Tuck.
The other murder case is that of the
State vs. Green N. Arnold. Arnold
shot and killed Lud Thurmond, a con
stable at Statham, a few weeks since.
The plea of the defendant in this case
will be self-defense. His counsel will
maintain that he shot to save his life.
Arnold will be represented by Col. E.
Brown, of Athens, and Col. John H.
Sikes, of Winter. The State will be
represented by Acting Solicitor-General
Tuck, Col. W. S. Armistead and Col. J.
A. B. Mahaffey.
Both these cases will be fought out to
the finish by both sides. There is con
siderable feeling in both cases, and the
courthouse will he crowded when the
trials come on.

GORMAN DEFEATED.
nr. McComas In Elected In Maryland to Suc
ceed Him.
Annapolis, Md., Jan. 26.—The long
senatorial deadlock was broken yester
day and Judge McComas was elected to
the United States senate to succeed
Gorman. The absent democrats were
present in the general assembly yester
day and the friends of McComas, who
came within six votes of being elected
Monday, forced the issue, with the re
sult that he was elected on the first bal
lot.
McComas was selected by au assem
bly caucus Monday night. Fifty-three
members met. Hon. Louis E. McComas
and J. C. Miililrin were placed in nomi-
111811 nation, the roll call resulting in 45 votes
for McComas and 7 for Miililrin. The
nomination of Mr. McComas was made
unanimous, after which the caucus ad
journed. The bolters refused to enter
the caucus.
It was reported that friends of the ad
ministration charged Mr. Gary with dis
loyalty to the administration, and. to
disprove the charge he threw the entire
weight of his influence, with the ex
ception of Senator Day, into the Mc-
Comas camp.
It was further represented that the
influences of the administration were
