Fred Tells of a Pair That the World Can’t Beat
For Speed.
There are a couple of oxen secreted
somewhere among the mountains adja
cent to Tallnlah Falls that are record
breakers for speed, if Fred Morton is to
he believed, and he has never been im
peached. According to Mr. Morton
these “cows” are superior to anything
on the mountains of Georgia or in the
valleys of the Empire State.
As travelers they are the “real thing,”
and beat all hollow mountain canary
birds, sometimes called by thoughtless
people, donkeys. Fred declares that on
one occasion he and a party of congenial
campanions wandered seven miles away
from the romantic falls of Tallulah, and
before they realized it fully, found them
selves in a lonely mountain spot some
distance from the public road. Seven
miles, over glen and dale, with four
miles of woods, and three miles of rough
(roods was far from pleasant, even to
contemplate, and these strolling pedes
triaus put their heads together to advise
ways and means to get back without
1 ‘drilling. ’ ’ To make a long story short,
they secured the services of a buxom
mountaineer and a yoke of oxen—“very
large oxen they were,” says Fred, “one
was black and bnt-headed and the other
was red and bnt-headed too.” .“Well,
sir,” declared Fred, dramatically, yes
terday, “you may not believe it, but it’s
true, every word of it, those oxen trav
eled that seven miles, and mind yon,
sir, throe of them were over very rough
roads, and the other four through the
woods, in exactly one hour, yes, sir, in
precisely* 60 minutes,” and then the
crowd insisted on taxing soda on Fred
