Ordinary Herrington Issued Three Licenses
Yesterday and .lore Are To Follow—The
Weather Bureau Should Consult
Our Matrimonial Statistics.
The solution to the weather problem
has been found, and the efficacy of the
United States weather bureau as a
weather prognosticator is simply laid in
the shade.
When you want to know the state of
the weather hereafter don’t consult the
weather man; just go to the ordinary’s
office in this county and ask for the
latest marriage statistics.
A few days since The Banner reporter
remarked upon the fact that only one
marriage license had been issued in this
county during the month of August,
stating at the time that so long as the
rainy weather continued there would
be no licenses issued, and now in verifi
cation of the fact that the position thus
taken was correct, yesterday Judge
Herrington issued three marriage li
censes, and the spell of the rain-god was
broken.

-Cincinnati, Sept. 6.—The middle-of-
the-road Populists convened their sec
ond day’s session of the national conven
tion at an early hour today, when the
temporary organization was made per
manent, and Chairman Ignatius Don
nelly . made another radical speech de
nouncing all those who had co-operated
with fusion movements and strongly
advocating the re-organization of the
party not only for an independent presi
dential ticket, but independent candi
dates for congress, state officers, etc.
A letter was read from Ex-Governor
David Waite, of Colorado, in which he
denounced Senator Butler as a treacher-
\
ous chairman and false leader, and ad
vocated the nomination of straight
Populistic tickets for president and
other offices.
An elaborate address to the people of
the United States was adopted. It re
affirms the previous platform/ of the
Populists, and covers many questions,
and in referring to the present situation
it says:
The People’s Party vote in 1894 and
1895 rose to nearly two millions, and
everything indicated its speedy national
triumph. In this emergency the Demo
cratic party saw that it had no recourse
but to steal one of the principles of the
despised Populists. In the Chicago con
vention of 1896, in a pre-arranged
theatrical scene of uproar and enthusi
asm, it moved to the front as the
devoted and life-long champion of that
which it had always opposed.
“Senator Butler, who is chairman of
our national committee, preached dis
integration and demoralization just as
Benedict Arnold stipulated for the scat
tering of the American forces, that the
British might the more readily over
throw the young republic.
“Mr. Butler taught our forces that the
first duty of a soldier was to break ranks
and go over to the enemy. All efforts
to chain the boundless subtlety of this
cunning man have been in vain.”

Numbers of People Congratulate Mr. Bond on
Securing Dr. Henson.
From Wednesday’s Banner.
Yesterday’s Banner told about the
Classic City Lyceum Association being
enabled to secure Dr. Henson, the gifted
Chicago minister,-for a lecture in Octo
ber. It proved good news to the literary
people of the city, and on every hand
congratulations were extended to the
management of the local association.
People spoke of Dr. Henson to the re
porter, and considerable interest was
aroused. That Dr. Henson made a pal
pable hit here in June is a fact undis
puted, and everybody seems anxious for
an opportunity to hear him again.
Now that Mr. Bond is through with
his duties appertaining to the opening of
the city schools he will have time to de
vote to canvassing the city and will
probably begin this worn the latter part
of this week. Already several people
have voluntarily subscribed for season
tickets, and one man was so enthusiastic
over the prospect of hearing Dr. Henson
that he subscribed for two season tick
ets, at $2.50 each, when, he stated, he
had no use bnt for ono.
The Classic City Lyceum Association,
judging from the interest taken, will
experience no trouble in bringing to
Athens this winter six of the strongest

Two Herring Street Ladies Mistake Gnats for
Busy Bees.
There reside on Herring street two
ladies who are passionately fond of
honey, and the other day they had an
experience that proved both exciting
and humiliating. During the afternoon
the vicinity-was visited by a tremendous
swarm of long—winged gnats. The ladies
in question soon spied them and at once
began very harried preparations to secure
a hive of “such beautiful bees.” Both
of them dearly loved honey, as before
stated, and a consummation long looked
for and devoutly hoped, was at hand.
Similtaneously two ladies, with bnt a
single thought for the time being, made
a rash for something with which to
charm the bees, one grabbed a tin pan
and the other seized a cow bell, and for
thirty minutes thereafter Herring street
inhabitants listened not enraptured to
music intended to “charm the savage
bee.”
Meantime the gnats took things easy
and quietly and complacently settled in a
hunch on the Btump of a departed tree
“Victory is ours”, shouted one charmer
to the other and now we will have
honey that onr own bees make. They
hugged each other in raptures of delight
and excitedly began a discussion as to
how long it would take to get a carpen
ter at work on the beehive, which was in
the future to be the home of the darl
ings.
The noise made and the perceptible
excitement of the ladies brought
“harried man” to the scene and he soon
investigated things. It is unnesssary to
add that each lady blamed the other for
“being so foolish” when the harried
man convinced them that their bees
were the kind that didn’t make honey.
Work on Building Progressing.
The work on the Episcopal church
building is progressing rapidly. The
scaffolding has all been taken down and
the rubbish on the interior removed.
The windows for the new building will
arrive in the city within the next week.
The building committee has about
decided to heat the building with steam.
The New Church at Whitehall.
The new Methodist church at White
hall will soon be under construction.
The subscriptions to the building fnnd
have been quite liberal, several hundred
dollars having already been collected.
The church will cost about $800. The
lumber for the new building is now
being sawed and work on the bnilding
will be started next week.

Terrific Damage to Corn.
A citizen of Athens who has jnst re

damage upon the corn crop. Over one
thousand acres of bottom land corn
along the North Broad river and its

This gentleman brought with him one
of the largest ears of corn ever seen in
Athens, and says that it is a fair sample
of the kind of corn rained by the over
flowing rivers and creeks.
All the City Schools of Athens Will Open This
Morning.
Vacation is over and school days are
here. The city schools will all opm
this morning, and the bright and hap
py faces of the children as they pass
along with their books under their arms
or swung across tueir shoulder, will
prove a familiar sight for several
months to come.
Snpt. Bond has caught up with his
work and his troubles are over. Yester
day he signed an immense number of
application cards and every indication
points to a large attendance.
A large number of new scholars, en-
1 tering the higher grades, is a circum
stance which demonstrates that Athens
has many new families as citizens.
By Monday morning all scholars will
be assigned to the particular school
which they will attend, as the work <f
grading will soon be complete.
Some of the children are apposed to
being vaccinated, and state that their
parents will not send them to school if
this is made compulsory.
Mr. Bond requests the Banner to
state that vaccination is considered ab
solutely necessary by the board of edu
cation, and under no circumstances will
any pupil be permitted to remain in
school longer than thirty days from today
who has not taken that safeguard
against smallpox.

ATHENS JEWS ARE UNITED
They are Unanimous so far as Believing in the
Innocence of Dreyfus.
In his rounds yesterday a Banner re
porter spoke to every prominent Jew he
met relative to the Dreyfus ease. It "' 33
surprising to note the animated interest
felt in this case here. The Jews, of
course, are the most interested, and many
Gentiles are highly indignant at th p lU '
justice perpetrated upon Dreyfus by the
French government. Without a single
exception, it is safe to say, that every
intelligent Jew in this city is well posted
on the Dreyfus case, from beginning to
end, and every move made is being
watched with breathless interest. Tbat
Dreyfus is entirely innocent and a much,
persecuted individual is the unauim ottS
opinion of every one to whom the u e "’ 5

more intelligent representatives of the
Jewish race predict that the French
government will ultimately be forced to
make repreation to their countryman,
