COL. S. J. TRIBBLE
the New Solicitor of the City Court of

Club of Clarke County.
Yesterday morning Governor Candler
re-appointed Judge Howell Cobb to the
position of Judge of the City Court of
Athens. He alsoappointed Col. Samnel
J. Tribble as Solicitor of the City Court.
These appointments were sent to the
Senate and were unanimously confirmed
by that body.
.1 udge Cobb is already on the bench
and Solicitor Tnbble will take charge of
his office next September.
Judge Cobb was the President of the
Clarke County Candler Club, and Mr.
Tribble was Secretary of that organiza
tion. That was the first Candler Club
organized in Georgia, and it was fitting
that these appointments should have
been the first ones to be made by Gov
Candler.

The Association of Colleges and

States adjourned yesterday at noon after
a most successful and satisfactory session
in this city.
Yesterday morning there were two
interesting discussions among tne teach
ers present.
One Wus on the subject of “Continuous
Sessions of Colleges and Universities,”
and upon the subject President J. H.
Raymond, of the University of Virginia,
read a most excellent paper.
Perhaps the most interesting of all the
discussions was on the subject of “The
Use of the Library in School "Work,”
papers being read by Prof. Edwin

Athens loses the Third Georgia and
Twenty-Second New York regiments.
The Third Georgia has been ordered
to report to General Lee at Jacksonville
and the Twenty-Second New York will
be mustered out of service.
This leaves only three regiments to
winter here though it is probable that
we will get five, as the war department
may send two other regiments to take
the place of the two taken away.
This is simply a surmise, however,
based on the fact that the camp was se
lected Tor the accommodation of five
regiments and the government wonld
hardly send three when every provision
had been made for five.
The army officers here are reticent
about giving out information, owing to
the fact that' nothing positively is
known as to»what will be done.
It is a sad fact, however, that Athens
loses the_Third Georgia and the Twen
ty-Second New York.
Future developments will be awaited
with interest.

Mr Andrew Price Ran Over the Little Fellow—
He Was driving Fast and Couldn’t Check
Up in Time—Boy’s Flesh Torn
From the Bone.
At the home of his ancle, Hon. E. T.
Brown, on Prince avenue, little Hoyt
Evans, the eleven year old son of Mr. J
P. Evans, lies serionsly.injnred, the re
sult of an unavoidable accident that oc
curred on Prince avenue yesterday af
ternoon about six o’clock.
The little fellow’s right leg is broken
jo8t above the knee, and the wound is a
very ugly if not dangerous one. The
flesh is badly torn and the bone crashed.
The accident was caused by the little
fellow attempting to cross the street at
a time when Mr. Andrew Price was
passing in his buggy. Mr. Price was
driving rapidly and could not check np
in time to avoid running over the lad.
The little fellow realized his danger and
became confused. Instead of crossing
quickly in front of the rapidly moving
buggy, be got half way across and at
tempted to turn back. It was too late,
however, and just as lie turned the
wheels struck him and threw him down,
passing over his leg, breaking it above
the knee.
Mr. Price immediately jumped from
the vehicle and picked young Evans up,
bnt the injury was so severe that the
lad could not stand. The injured boy
was carried at onco to the home of his
ancle, and Drs. Qnillain and Conway
were summoned.
The physicians dressed the wound and
their patient was restly quietly last
night. The physicians hope that ampu
tation will not be necessary, but fear
that snch will be the case.
Fool play was attempted on a promi
nent Jackson county planter, who came
to town with four bales of cotton yester
day.
Some one in the city attempted to get
his bankrpie, and was only prevented
from doing so by a miscalculation as to
the time necessary for a deadening drag
to get in its work.
The gentleman made several purchases
at various stores and when he paid for
the articles purchased handled his
money rather carelessly. At one place
he was invited to take a little drink and
accepted the invitation. He was not in
the least intoxicated when he entered
the store, and had not taken another
drink during the day. He remained in
the store five cr six minntes, made two
or three slight purchases and left, going
immediately to his buggy which wa
standing in waiting, and started home.

• The Engaged Girl.
The engaged girl, like the poor, we
have always with us. She is always
interesting, particularly to those who
have a fine opportunity to observe her.
She is never, or seldom, passed withoct
particular notice. Frbm tne time it is
known that she is to be somebody’s wife
there is a new interest surrounding her.
If she is a society girl the papers tell
about it, and people talk about it, and
lucky indeed is the girl if she has pleased
everybody as well as herself in the selec
tion of a husband. Sympathy is due the
girl whose heart goes a straying when
parents and guardians who think them
selves wise enongh to order enpid’s ways
forbid that it shall stray. It is sad
when all the world does not love a lover.
Bnt the greatest part of the pity of it all
shonld be given to the girl in the case.
A man is seldom wounded very deeply
by the expressed objections of his sweet
hearts parents and relatives, just so the
maid is true. Being certain of her trust
and love, it rather makes him proud
that he has an opportunity to defy
parental or anybody else’s objection and
steal away bis bride.
The sooner a cough or cold is cured
without harm to the sufferer the better.
Lingering colds are dangerous. Hack
ing cough is distressing. One Minute
Cough Cure quickly cures it. Why suf
fer when such a cough cure is within
reach? It is pleasant to the taste.
GRAIN LETTER-
Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 3.—Wheat opened
weak or on dull and lower cables and
the more peaceful outlook aboard. Early
buying was scattering while Bartlett
crowd were persistent sellers. The
large N W receipts helped the general
local bearish sentiment and buyers of
yesterday turned sellers. This resulted
in farther decline of 3^c below the open
ing: Odessa stock showed 3 }4 million
more than the estimate and European
visible increased for the month 9,000,000.
All news of a bearish nature, but the
market is narrow and the scalpers who
sold early bought in their contracts
which rallied prices fractionally from
tne lowest. The position is probmetical
and unless experts continue or more
war scares are manufactured the ten
dency will be down as long as large
receipts are reported daily. Corn was
dull with more sellers than buyers.
Provisions are strong especially ribs and
lard upon the decrease in supplies and
good demand. We can’t see enongh in
wheat market to advise either way at
present quotations.

Delivered Two Interesting Lectures on Normal

D firing the session of the Association

the South in this city, one of the most
distinguished visitors present was Chan

Institute, at Nashville.
Chancellor Payne, delivered two ex
cellent lectures on “Normal Training,”

School, and the other to the teachers of
the Athens city schools.
him in a social glass, so the man stated
to a prominent young gentleman of this
city, insisted on his remaining in the
store for a while and resorted to several
subterfuges in order to induce him to
linger. The countryman, however,
saspected nothing, but it was growing
late and he-wanted to get home before
night.
This probably saved him from being
robbed. At any rate he left the store,
and within five minntes after doing so
was seized with a violent pain in the
stomach. In a few minutes he sank to
the foot of his buggy in a stupor and it
was sometime before he recovered The
gentleman is confident that he was

Capt. Beusse, who had been for several

The sentiment among the Athens
boys is distinctly averse to remaining in

of the First and Second Georgia will not
receive many men from Athens.

Georgia has won four games this sea
