THE- ATHENS BAiJkER: FRIDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 11, 1898
“Pitts’ Carminative
Saved My Baby’s Life*’’
Johnson Station, Ga. September 16,1898.
LAMAR & RANKIN DRUG CO., Atlanta, Ga.
Gentlemen: I can not recommend your Pitts’ Carminative too
strongly, as 1 owe my baby’s life to it. She had Cholera Infantum
when five months old, and 1 could get no relief until 1 began using Pitt s
Carminative. The fever left her when 1 had given her but two bottles,
and she had fattened so she did not look like the same child. 1 advise all
mothers who have sickly or delicate children to give this remedy a trial.
Respectfully, MRS. LIZZIE MURRAY.

Washuigton, Nov. 9.—A message re
ceived at the navy department last night
from Captain Crowninshield, chief of
the navigation bureau, who is in New
York, called attention to the report that
the Spanish cruiser, Maria Teresa, had
been seen off Cat island. The captain
expresses his belief in the accuracy of
the report, aud suggested to the depart -
ment that the repair ship Vulcan, now
at Norfolk, he sent at once to make
search for the derelict.
The department acted at once npou
the-suggestion. A telegram was sent to
the commandant of the Norfolk navy
yard directing him to place the Vulcan
in command of Captain McCalla, the
captain of the yard, and send her with
all dispatch to look for the Teresa. A

Raleigh, Nov. 9.—The Democrats cer
tainly won in the Fifth, Sixth and Sev
enth districts. Returns not complete,
make it practically certain that they
have won in the First, Third and Ninth.
In the Second and Fourth the two Popu
lists, who were endorsed by the Demo
crats, are elected. The Republicans re
elected Linney in the Eighth district,
where the majority is redneed.
The legislature is two-thirds Demo
cratic on ^mnt ballot and the Demo
cratic judicial ticket is elected by not
less than 20,obo.
Two years ago the Fusionists carried
the state by 40,000. The vote yesterday
shows that there has been a revolution.
Charlotte, Nov. 9.—Tho elections
North Carolina yesterday resulted in
the greatest democratic victory on re
cord in the state. Gains are reported
from every county, especially from the
eastern section. There were no disturb
ances of any consequence.
The democratic judicial ticket is el<“^-
cd by about 30,000 majority. The legis
lature is overwhelmingly democratic.
The following congressmen are elect
ed :
First District—John H. Small, dem
ocrat.
Second District—George H. White,
(colored) republican.
Third District—Charles R. Thomas,
democrat.
Fourth District—J. W. Atwater, in
dependent (populist).
Fifth District—William W. Kitchen,
democrat.
Sixth District—John D. Bellamy,
Democrat.
Seventh District—Theodore F. Kluttz,
Domocrat.
Eighth District—Romiulus R. Linuey,
Republican.
Ninth District—W. T. Crawford,
Domocrat.
Atwater was endorsed by the Demo
crats, and may be credited to that
column. So the Republicans get only
two out of the nine congressmen from
this state.
Charlotte, N. O., Nov. 8.—A special
from Wilmington, N. C., says: New
Hanover county, of which Wilmington
is the county seat, went Democratic by
400 majority. There was no d isturbance
at aiiy of the polling places.
HOW TO LOOK GOOD.
Good looks are really more than skin
deep, depending entirely on a healthy
condition of all the vital organs. If the
liver be inactive, you have a bilious
look; if your stomach be disordered,
you have a dyspeptic look; if your kid
neys he affected, yon have a pinched
look. Secure good health, and you will
surely have good looks. “Electric Bit
ters” is a good Alterative and Tonic.
Acts directly on the stomach, liver and
kidneys. Purifies the blood, cures
pimples, blotches and ■ boils, and gives a
good complexion. Every bottle guaran
teed. Sold at Dillard Drug Co., H. R.
Palmer & Sons’ and Smith Bros., drug
stores, 50 cents per bottle.
New York, Nov. 9.—Revised returns
as they came in early today made prac
ticallv no change in those of last night,
which showed the election of Colonel
Theodore Roosevelt, republican, for gov
ernor by a plurality of from 18,000 to
20,000 over Augustus Van Wyck, demo
crat.
As compared with the election of 1896,
when Black defeated Porter, this shows
a republican loss of from 190,000 to 195-
000. Roosevelt came to Harlem river
with 105,000 plurality, and Van Wyck
had but 85,000 in Greater New York
with which to meet him. An analysis
of the vote outside of the city shows
chat Roosevelt lost 61,500 as compared
with Black. In the city his vote was
61,000 smaller than Black’s.
In the country districts Van Wyck
ran about 20,000 and in the city about
54,000 ahead of Porter.
The state congressional delegation
will probably stand 15 republicans to 19
democrats, a democratic gain of 12. In
old New York city (Manhattan borough)
no republican has been returned and a
notable feature of the election was the
defeat by Captain William Astor Chan-
ler of Lemuel Qnigg for congress in
Fourteenth district, where the former
similar order was cabled to Captain
Converse, at Guantanamo, directing
him to send the big wrecking tug Poto
mac from that place northward on the
same quest. She is in charge of Com
mander J. E. Craven, and the depart
ment thinks that she will be in the
vicinity of Cat island within 36 hours.
The Vulcan was one of the vessels
which was towing the Teresa when she
was supposed to have foundered, and
the department believes that she will
reach the scene of the wreck in about 48
hours after leaving Norfolk. *
Cat island lies about 30 miles south of
the spot where the Teresa was last seen,
and it is said at the department the ves
sel did not founder outright within a
very few hours after having been cut
adrift she would almost certainly have
fetched up on the shoal beach off Cat
island, for the wind and the tide set
directly on that beach.
If so the location is much more favor
able for saving the ship than the posi
tion occupied by her off Santiago.

There is but one way to cure it.
The disease is in the blood, and all the

French Bondholders Ask Unde Sam to Shoulder
the Debt.
Washington, Nov. 9.—The foreign
bondholders have at last moved formally
to protect their interests in Cnba and
Porto Rico. The initial steps have been
taken through the agency of the French
embassy, which in this case acts no
longer as the representative of the
Spanish government, but for French
subjects.
Through the embassy a most formida
ble statement has been presented to the
state department, being an account of
the vanous Spanish bonds owned by
French citizens, chargeable against the
territories either seized or set free by
the act of the United States government.
The total snm of these bonds ran np
far into the millions. Just what is ex
pected shall be done with them is not
made clear. The United States, of
course, will not pay them, but it may be
that the French government looks to it
to canse the independent government of
Cnba to assume liabilities for the re
demption of the bonds charged against
that island, and when that government
shall have been duly installed by the act
of the United States government.
It is probable that other holders of
like bonds, Germany and British, will
take similar steps to have their claims
brought through their diplomatic rep
resentatives to the attention of the
United States government, and it may
even be that the holders of such bonds
in Spain, though Spanish citizens, will
take a like course, which would present
a novel claim upon the generosity of the
United States government.

Workmen Engaged Removing Wreckage From
the Structure.
Washington, Nov. 9 —The work of
clearing the capitol of the wreckage of
Sunday’s fire is being carried forward
rapidly by a large force of workmen.
The heavy stone arch under the tile
room of the United States supreme
court .has been settling steadily for the
last two days, and it was decided today
to tear it out and rebuild this section of
masonry. It is a difficult operation,
however, as the room above is loaded
with the valuable old records and files
of the supreme court, which may be
dumped in inextricable confusion if the
sustaining arch is removed. Boat hooks
will be used tomorrow to draw the files
from the room, as it is considered dan
gerous to enter the room, aud the re
building of the arch will theu proceed.
