‘TU Keep Couit Open Till September
And Clarke County Folks Must Work”
Judge West of the city court yes
terday morning put the vagrants on
notice that he will give them all em
ployment If they give him a fair
chance. “1 expect to keep this court
open,” he said, “till next September,
anyhow, and’ If the loafers and idlers
and vagrants can be rounded up by
the officers, and If these officers will
be watchful and vigilant and arrest
all who are dodging work and In their
Idleness living off the community by
dishonesty or graft, I will see that
they get good jobs, after conviction,
on the roads of Clarke county."
The remarks were suggested by
the record ot the court In several
cases yesterday morning.
Two Hard-Luckera.
Sydney Hymen and M. Grcenhoot
were arraigned on a charge of beat
ing their way on a freight. They did
not appear to be regulation hoboes—
they put up a pretty straight story of
having secured work In a southwest
ern city, being robbed ot their means
and tickets enroute, and had droppen
onto a freight to help them on. The
judge assessed a fine of $30 upon
each, including the costs to each case.
A Suit for Several Suite.
John Anderson, colored, was charg
ed with larceny from the bouse, and
the case bore a strong family resem-
b!nnre to larceny after trust. Ander
son (not “John Anderson, my Joe,
John,” of lyrical fame) had taken
stilts of clothes belonging to Mr.
Breedlove, disposed of them and fail
ed to turn in the money. It waa
shown that this was not the first time
he had done the same trick. The
Judge gave him twelve months on the
gang without the alternative of pay
ing a fine and he sounded a timely
warning for the pressing club boys
that they be mighty careful how they
take clothes to sell and fail to ac
count for them.
Sack Thief Got a Year.
Will Daniel, the young negro who
stolo several packs of sacks, was
sliow:e(l up-a pretty tough customer
and was likewise sent to the gang
for a year—without the opportunity
to pay a fine.
