If your Amerlcnnlum Is founded

over, you bare got to treat people
with respect and with dignity If you
aro going to get tile bust out of them.
What recognition do we give to the
teacher? What social Hiatus doss nhu
have? We talk of Americanism, and
there is tbo person who Is at the very
heart and center of Americanism.
Upon her depends our future. She
can bo made the greatest Instrumen
tality tor building up the right spirit
within the boy and gljl In Amorlca—
the greatest of all instriRncnUtlties
for Americanization. -
J had rather hove the school teach

give to her? With what dignity do
wo troat her? Wliat dofcronco do
wo pay her? Socially, whore Is sho?
If you love this country. If you be
liuvo that you aro a good American,
tee that the teacher gets an adequate
salary; see that sho gets proper rec
ognition. For all of life Is not
money. The intangible things are the
things (or which most people light
Hnd that aro of most value. And there
Is no better illustration of that than
the kty of Washington, to which pen-
I pie are drawn lnrgcly because of those
intangible things, not the least ol
I which Is our vanity, our love of dis
tinction.
Just outsldo of Chicago there Is a
model country school. Do you know
that we do not give the children in
the country districts a fair chance?
I wanted several year's ago to get
Congress to appropriate $300,000 that
I might get a representative teacher
from each district In the United
States to spend.a month at that school
In Illinois, where they could And out
how country children should be
taught'; how each boy and each girl
In tho sqhool could bo made to artlo-
ulato. wif5 father and mother on the
rarm. 1 could not? get the money.
Cut sortie day we will dignify tho
country school and still more dignify
tho country school teacher.
Talk about being underpaid and not
being able to lire; not being treated
with respect and having no dignity
given to you! No one has as Jus
tifiable a complaint . as Hie school

(Special to The Banner,) '
Atlanta. Ga., June 24.—A. thorough
Investigation of the affairs, of Geor
gia Tech have convqnced leading men
of the state of Gcoigla that there Is
no Institution in the United States
tbit faces a brighter outlook than
Georgia Tech, and, on the contrary,
there Is no institution that Is facing
a more serious crisis than Georgia
Tech.
President K. G. Mathcson in an ad
dress. before tho Atlanta Chamber of
Commerce stated that Georgia Tech
i» facing a‘ critical condition whlsh
is -entirely dua to- her development.
The school baa become so popular,
net only through tho state of Georgia
but throughout the United States as
well, that It, Is swamped with students
and in order to do them Justice, a
greatly enlarged program must bo ef-
foctivo immediately.
Mr. Matheson added very slgnlfl-
cantly. that, with proper facilities
Georgia Tech could be tho means of
making the State of Georgia better
known internationally than she Is
now. (or tho reason that they hare
had requests from six forolgn conn-

| Colonel Eugene Black, president of
the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce,
in commenting on the situation, said:
'This-campaign for Georgia Tech Is
the only money-raising entorp'rinc In
which the Atlanta Chamber of Com
merce has taken * hand thlk year.
We feel that OcorglUyTech Is one of
the greatest assets that the Stato of
Georgia possesses and to neglect tho
opportunity which Is presented
through the strengthening o' this
cahoot, would he an Industrial and
educational crime. It Is mdoubtedly
true, that from now on. tho greatest
ihdustrltl development In the United
Stetea will be in the South and it is
likewise true that in the South the
greatest Industrial development will
be the: greatest state In the South—«
our grand old state of Georgia, whose
industrial possibilities are almost
limitless. It will surprise many peo
ple to realize that already Georgia’s
Industrial development equals her ag
rlcultural development. Beyond ques-
Uon.-Oeorgla Tech is responsible to a
considerable extent for the present In
dustrial progress and her further as
sistance in this respect will be com-
medsurato to tho way we Georgians
equip hof to, continue her sptendld
work. 1 _
“I understand, from Dr. Matheson
that Tech took, care ot 2,209 studenta
last year and that the enrollment
far next year Is. already double what
11.was last year at this time- Tech
must, without fall, he given, adequate
equipment so that sho can capitalise
to the fullest exteat the splendid repu
tation that- she haj sb Justly earned.
Without question she must be so
placed that she can servo our state _
In a still groiter capacity."
v Ths Greater Tech Campaign Was
launched before the war hut efforts
were suspended during that Period.
For some time, operations have been
taken to present Georgia Tech's cause
renewed and steps are being rapidly
and her claim to every Georgian.
Wickes WimbQlt, financial director
of the campaign said, "Georgia Tech
already' ranks as tho best Technolo
gical school. In the south and she
stands second best in tho United
Stales. . It shall bo our aim within
the next few months to mako her
