(Special to The Banner.)
Atlanta, June 24.—Though the great
er part ot the session in the house
of representatives today was con
sumed In the Introduction of new
bills, of which there were almost aa
many as yesterday, a reasonable dent
was made In the work on the calen
dar of ripe business brought over’front
last session-
Tho measure of Judge McCall ot
Brooks, who has resigned since the.
last session, proposing to amend the
constitution so the term of governor
shall be four years Instead of two,
was recommitted on account of the
absence of the author and no arrange
ment having been made for some oth
er member to handle the bill. The
hill by Mr. Arnold, of Clay, proposing
a system of classification ot property
for taxation, which was one of prime
importance last year, also was recom
mitted. This Is the measure which
the state tax commission spent nearly
a year in perfecting and possibly will
bo worked out In this session. In
deed, If this session does not bring
out some system of tax reform, wheth
er it be on this baslB or something
entirely different—but a reform of
some kind—there Is ground for the
strong belief that an extraordinary
session will be called, with nothing
stated In the call other than tax legis
lation.
Several house bills which were left
pending at the close of tho last sea-
sion, and were yet on the calendar of
unfinished business, were withdrawn
by their guthors today because simi
lar legislation was passed in the sen
ate last year and 1# now on thn •
statute books. Two small Individual
pension bills were passed, and the
bill by McIntyre of Thomas and Rog
ers 01 Elbert, to appropriate money
to pay expenses of legislative commit
tees, was tabled.
Tho bill by Lankford of Toombs,
providing that Jury commissioners In .
the state be selected by the. grand
juries Instead of by the Judges, w*a
killed because of adoption of a sub
stitute which provided that the com
missioners be appointed by the judges
.upon recommendation of grand juries ,
but that they could be removed by
the judge at will. The substitute was
not agreeable to the backers of the
original bill, and the measure lost by _
a vote of 26 to 121.
