Steers Resolute In
America Cup Race
(By Associated Press.)
Now York,# July 15.—Charles Fran
us Adams, 2uil, the man at the wheel
who will try to steer the Resolute to
victory in her first race in defense of
the American’s Cup off Sandy Hook
today, is characterized by experts as
the premier American yachtsman.
He has owned more than a score of
yachts ad has sailed nearly 100, small
and largo and some of these have
been the best boats of their class in
America -and the world.
.Mr. Adams is.treasurer of Harvard
Fnfversity arid a member of the cor
poration, a director in many com pa'
nhs and in personal charge of truse
estates amounting to many millions
»Vars ago he became known to yacht
ing associates under the nickname of
•‘Deacon’ and some of thorn still call
him..by that name,
Horn at Quincy, Mass., he came of
a long line of sea faring men and in
hcrited a love for the sea. He is
credited with calm judgment and a
high type of sportsmanship. His fath
er used to take hiip sailing in Heston
Harbor when lie was a child and by
time he was 12 years old lie was win
ning races with his r.mall boats. In
those days he Jyarned a lot about the
tricky side cf races for rules were
lax.
In later years Mr. Adams built and
sailed to victory many notable yachts

There may be a happy omen in the
act thut Charles F. Adams years ago
blocked the aspirations of the little
Scotch cutter, tho Minerva, which

ber of American boats in 1890. Her
victories were regarded as ominous
and suggested to yatchtamen the pos-

America’s Cup. The Minerva was
sailed by Charlie Earr( the famous
skipper, who defended tlu* cup as
skipper of the Columbia in 1901 and

Adams with Ills little Gossoon stopped
' the victorious career by winning two
