“The world’s multiplicity of New

to the fact that our calendar Is largely
»n-arbitrary device, The earth re
volvea around the sun in 365.2422
days, which makes tho true year a
very odd measure of time. And It
ip almost as difficult to choose a logi
cal beginning Mr the yoar as It is to
find tho starting point of a circle.
Different peoples have selecfed differ
ent starting points and have also as
sumed the year to be of slightly dif
ferent lengths. This has not only re
sulted In the years beginning at dif

times of beginning to vary in their re

year. It Is ai though a clock had
half a dozen rr more hands, all mov

“The most logical starting points for
tho year would seem, to be summer

them have been made to mark tho

Tokio, Dec. 30.—Japan’s population
during 1919 was Increased by only
300,000, as against a usual rate of
628,000, according to an official report
of the recent census. During 1919
births numbered 1,823,481 and deaths
1.513,687, the net gain, therefore, be
ing 308,794. Reduced number ot mar
riages in consequence of higher cost
of living Is one reason given by tha
authorities for the falling off. But
it iy probable that the principal cause
was an abnormally heavy Infant •mor
tality due to tho Influenza epidemic.
The divorce rato in 1918 is unoffi
cially returned at 112 per 1,000 mar
rlages. This compares with a Ger

highest In Europe. It ahould be re

tics are subject to correction.
