New York. Feb. 4.—A-sharp early
advance in Liverpool led to consider
able covering at the opening of tint
cotton market here this morning ami
first prices showed advances of 4 to
11 points. Later cables, v. re easier,
however, while foreign exchange war
easy and the market here soon weak-,
ened with March selling down to 13.13,
or five prints net lower nnd into new
Vlw groumi for the season. May tased
oft. from 13.70 to 13.00 and July from
Jpfr to 13.93 under renewed pressure
of Wall street and southern selling.
Private cables attributed the early ad
vance in Liverpool to the discontinu
ance of the excess profit tax by the
British government but said the ad
vance had met Manchester and Ameri
can selling.
Beth foreign and domestic trade in
terests were reported buyers on the
oafly decline, while there was a good
fteai cf covering and prices rallied
later In the morning with March sell-
Inft up Irom 13.10 to 13.47, while May
advan-Ttd to 13.84 with the general
ligt ruling about 28 to 38 points net
higher. Trading became quiet after |
the advance, hut prices held within 2
or 3 points of the best around mid
day. Manchester cables reported yarns
and cloths very weak. Sales of print
cloths in the Fall River market for the
week were estimated at 90.000 pieces.
After selling at 13.57 for March and
13.95 for May. or about 39 to 43 points
hot higher the market turned a shade
easier during the middle of afternoon
under realizing and there mere rear-
