Atlanta, Ga.. April 22.—The State
Industrial commission, which admin
isters . the workmen's compensation
law, handles more' 'human interest
matter In conitectlon with the aeti-
dents it passes on in a week than
probably develops hi the balance of
the state government in a year.
So far this month the commission
has had, reported to it mere than eight
hundred accidents jn the state, some
of them trivial, some of them serious,
many of them Involving death'.
One interesting case just handled
by the commission—the law forbids
that they give out names In any of
the cases—Is that of a man who was
kicked on the chin by a cow, result
ing In the man's ueck being broken.
The dairy, of course, was liable for
the man’s death, In that the cow wag
the property and the cow am) the man
were both in the performance of duty
when the kicking occurred.
Another case Is that wherein the
employer is asked to make settlement
for the death of an employe who swal
lowed a tack while In .the perform
ance of hI B duty. The man Vho swal
lowed the tack’was ah upholsterer, i
One of the moW Interesting case*
handled Is where a workmen (ell Into
stream of water from a bridge
which was being constructed. The
workman succeeded In swimming
through a stiff current to the bank
some distance below the bridge, and
was about to filin’) out when other
employes on the hank, and the fore
man of the gang, yelled to him fa- go
back and garble hat, Vhlch had come
off when he fell Into- the water. The
workman attempted to iwim back,
through the current to get the hat and
was drowned. He was In the per
formance of his duty when he fell
Into the water, but the question
arises If. after he succeeded in »wlm-
mlng to safety, when he then turned
around and attempted to awlm hack
for the hat he was then performing
any duty for his employer.
These are Just three"""P 1 ®*
what the commission Is handling this
month.
