LAND BRI
Tiny Plot Stretching Only
Thirty One Feet on Broad
way for Big Rental.
(By Associated Press)
Now York. May 6. — Manhattan
Island, once sold by an Indian for
$24 and a few drinks of firewater, has
become so valuable that a tiny plot
stretching only thirty-one feet along
Broadway recently was leased for an
annual rental of about $132 a square
foot. Real estate men said this was
the highest figure for which land was
•ver rented here.
The site is at Broadway and Thirty
fourth street and extends about fifty
feet along the latter. Several years
tgo a department store wished to buy
»he corner plot, having procured the
land on both sides, as the site of
skyscraper. But the owner would not
sell* even for $1,000,000, and the big
store had to erect its home around
the small building.
A four-story structure, housing on
the ground floor a busy cigar store,
still remains on the valuable corner
lot, on all sides loft buildings rear
their bulks of steel and stone. The
new lessee, who will pay $3,900,000 for
rent, taxes and other expenses over
i 21-year period, plans to erect a nar
row skyscraper on the triangular plot.
\ candy-making corporation will oc
cupy tho building.
Twenty years ago Robert S. Smith,
who owls the property, startled realty
men by paying $387,000 for the land,
which has only 1,250 square feet of
area. He had come to America with
$5.75 from his native Russja in 1880.
When he bought the property lie was
told such a small strip was not worth
the price and could never be profit
i hie.
Within a few hours after the $3,500,-
)00 lease was drawn up another candy
.oncern offered $10,000 more a year
for the land, but it was too late.
Firelighters Made of Clay.
A farmer in Saskatchewan has fonnd
clay deposits on his land from which
he has been manufacturing firelight
ere on a small scale. The lighter is
is in the form of a brick. If soaked
in kerosene a few minutes and ig
lilted the brick will burn for a half
hour with a steady flame and when
exhausted can be replenished with
•terosene and used indefinitely.
