Good Raferences Are Often Deceiving
Anyway and Many Poor Working
Girls Without Them Are Not
Given a Fair Chance,
Constance Say*.
A shining example of the fallacy of
employing help solely on the refer
ence plan Is presented to employers
in a delightful way by* Constance
Talmadge in her newest picture, "Good
References,” at the Palace Theater
lOday.
In this picture Constance, as the
heroine, takes the part of a poor girl
seeking a lob without references. She
i« turned down everywhere, uuttl
finally she "borrows" the References
of a sick friend. The scheme works
and she gets a job, and proves Quito
efficient.
The trouble with many employers,
according to Miss Talmadge, is the
fact that they themselves pay too
little attention to the study of char
acter and too much to looking Up past
records of achievement.
"Many glris with little or" no pre
vious experience would prove excel
lent workers if they were only given
a chance," she said. “But the em
ployers are afraid to try them out.
However, times are getting better, and
1 hope to see all employers gain a
broader and more human point. of
view
"If a picture such as the one I
have just made has any lnflusnce to
ward bettering the condition of de
serving girls by calling attention to
bad business practices, then I will
feel satisfied.
"Knowing that references are some
times misleading and often fail to do
Justice to the hearer, wise employers
ure hiring their assistants on a trial
basis. Experiments in many of the
country’s largest offices has proven
this to be the most satisfactory and
economical method of maintaining an
efficient staff.”

There is a feeling among the dele
gates to tbe advertising convention
and the officers ot the Associated Ad

the greatest movements the organisa
tion has ever started. It has been
met with great enthusiasm, based
upon the fact that tbe movement has
a firm economic foundation. It will
help the salespeople to be more use
ful. will help tbe merchant and will
help the public.
The advertising convention, which
was opened Sunday afternoon with a
