Costs oi Doing Business Fer
Various Retail Lines
To do modern business in retail merchandising av
erage standard costs have been accurately figured
as follows: V \ r ?
For Hardware Stores, per cent
For Clothing Stores (Men’s), per cent ..
For Drug Stores, per cent —
For Department Stores, per cent
For Grocery Stores, per cent
20.11
23.2’i
25.6;’
23.05
18.91
In all these budgets, which include Rent, Salaries,
Heat, and Light, Delivery, Supplies, Insurance
Taxes, General Expenses, Depreciation, Shrinkage
and Bad Debts, there is also the item of Advertis
ing.
In other words, Advertising is as much a part of
retail merchandising as Rent, Salaries, Heat and
Light, etc.
It is interesting to note the per centage or budget
for advetrising in the various lines of retail mer
chandising. It varies sharply.
f, Advertising
For Hardware Stores, per cent 1.12
For Clothing Stores (Men’s), per cent 3.16
For Drug Stores, per cent 2.76
For Department Stores, per cont 4.67
For Grocery Stores, per cent 1.83
In other words for stores in the above lines doing
$100,000 worth of business a year, their advertis
ing appropriations would run something like this:
Advertising
A Hardware Store, year $l,!20 no
A Clothing Store (Men’s), year 3,160.no
A Drug Store, year 2,760.no
A Department Store, year |,67o.o i
A Grocery Store, year 1,830.00
Modern business is built on scientific lines ami
..with accurate data. Mr. Merchant, if you are
spending more than the above per centages or bud
gets it might be worth your while to revise your
various costs. If you are spending loss you may
be sure your costs are out of line and not properly
distributed for best results, according to modern
standards.
