phone to his family November 9.
The efforts to recover the body
were started shortly afier Holmes
and Thurmond allegedly confessed
Thursday and were taken to San
Francisco to prevent possible mob
violence from San Jose residents
who swarmed about the count
house here.
Sheriff William J. Emig, who
trapped Thurmond in a telephone
booth at a San Jose garage while
the latter was allegedly making
further ransom demands on Alex
J. Hart, wealthy San Jose merch
ant and father of young Hart,
said no one except the two men
was involved.
Holmes was later arrested at a
hotel, to which officers were led
by Thurmond.
Sheriff Emic said the alleged
confessions of the two men varied
only in minor details and in that
‘each sought to place the major re
sponsibilty on the other,
Holmes, operator of a San Jose
service station, and Thurmond,
until recently employed by an oil
company, are members of respect
ed Santa Clara county faniilies.
No suspicion was directed to
ward them, Sherift Emig said, un
til the telephone cafl to the Hart
home was quickly traced and
Thurmond was found in the ga
rage booth.
