First Aid Training Is G;;);fl
By Red Cross Organizatiy,
Fifty-eight First Aid Cer
tificates Are llssued in
Clarke County
' “Training the public in first aid
measures is one of the most im
portant tasks of the American Red
Cross,” Fritz Thompson, chairman
of the Athens Red Cross Roll Call
said today. The roll call member
ship enrellment opens Monday,
November 12, and the goal here is
1,000 members.
Mr. Thompson said that the per
sonnel of the campaign committee
{is being enrolled this week, and
volunteer workers are requireq. to
telephone the Red Cross office, 871,
between 10 to 12 o'clock and 3 and
\5 o’clock in order that their names
may be enrolled,
Discussing the first aid training,
Mr. Thompson said “two results
have been noted time and again in
the groups to. which Red Cross
training has been given. “First,
there is a marked decrease in the
number of accidents, as a result of
the accident-consciousness the
training has developed; and second,
there is a lessening of grave con
sequences such as death or perm
la.nent crippling in many cases
where proper first aid measures
were used by those near the scene
of the accident.
“First aid is interpreted by the
Red Cross is the practical applica
tion of the age-old habit .of nei
ghborliness in time of distress. A,c-!
cidental injuries have always been
incurred by active people, and
doubtless they will always happen.
Yet, even with modern ecivilization
developing new hazards, the rate
of accidents is hot commensurate]
with the increasing danger, be-]
cause of the modern demand that
| proper safeguerds be provided forl
all machinery and that carelessness |
be prevented on the part of the
human beings who use the mach
ines.
! “All of us who drive or ride in
automobiles should also be con
lcemed over the great hazards on
American highways. Approximat- |
ely 30,000 men, women and children !
are killed on our highways every!
year—a terrific toll, a number
equal to the inhabitants in a mid-‘
rdle sized city. And this doesn’t
take into account the mained, the
‘many injured for life. and the sut‘-’
sering and great waste entailed by |
these accidents. l
“The Athens chapter of the Redl
Cross has given much attention ;0!
the problem of first aid. Classes'
are held every year, usually beingl
conducted by C. W. Jones. In Clarke
county last year 58 first aid certi-'
ficates were issued,
“The federal government tais
year called on the Red Cross for
instruction for men in Civilian
Conservation Corps camps and on |
Civil and Public Works projects. |
These requests give an official
governmental endorsement of Red
Cross accident prevention and
have been a matter of satisfaction
to Red Cross officials that all re
quests have been promptly and
adequately met.
“funds must be available for
similar .calls in the next twelve
months, and I feel sure that the
Athens chapter will, as always, re
spond to the need of enrolling a|
big membership for the ! coming|
year.” “

proves they are. : ;
If anyone in your family is
occasionally sluggish or ¢onsti
pated; especially any child, you
should know this medical truth:
~ You cannol get safe relief with
any medicine if you cannot regulate
the dose. And to regulate dosage,
‘you should have a liguid laxative.
With a liquid laxative, vou ecan
gradually reduce the dose. And that
is the secret of safe relief from
a sluggish, constipated condition.
Why Doctors Use
Liquid Laxatives
A liquid laxative can be measured.
Its action can be thus controlled. If
properly made, of nafural laxative
elements fike senna and -cascara,
it forms no habit —even in the
youngest child. And such a laxative
will help the bowels to help them
