Garden Club News Items
By MRS. ED DORSEY, JR.
~ Publicity Chairman For Garden
| Club of Georgia ‘
: That grandeur and heauty of
lscenery are great factors .in the
public welfare of the community
| is evidenced by the interest shown
| in roadside beautification through
’!nm the nation. Mr. Hubert Owens,
‘mndscape architect, connected with
the state highway board of Geor
gia, says that modern roadside
improvement can be considered to
consist of three major divisions:
Elimination of ugly features; pres
lervutio-n of natural beauty; suita-
Ible planting to enhance the high
| way’'s attractiveness, Roadside
. beautification is only in its in
fancy in Georgia. It cannot bhe at
tempted as a makeshift for pres
‘emt effect spread over this and
that highway. It should be a mat
‘ter of intelligent planning, careful
lexecufion and proper maintenance
' so that the ultimate result will be
| lasting beauty along the roadsides.
Principles of landscape design
should be applied in planning the
planting along the roadway just
‘as they should be applied to home
grounds or any other landscape
~development. The basic principles
of design are the same with lim
itations affecting roadside plant
ing. This does not mean that
planting must be sacrificed, but
must be adjusted to uses of the
highway. :
The State Highway Board of
Georgia is building a network of
good roads throughout the state,

THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA
and is giving the greatest consid
eration towards utility and safety
and beauty both within and be
vond the right of way. The board
offers the gervices of the highway
landscape architeet, Mr. Owens, in
an advisory ecapacity to individuals
and civic organizations in the
state who wish to aid in roadside
beautification. T, hasten this de-
velopment, every Georgian should
feel that he or she has a part in
this great program. If very Geogr
gian would take an active interest
in this work, within a sow years
vast progress would be seen. The
Highway Board will welcome .sp
plications from individuals or :ser
vice organizations wishing to par
ticipate in any of the interesting
problems, such as the develop
ment of a roadside park, planting
of banks, ete. It is ruggested that
all entering this activity confine
their efforts to an area small
enough so that all work necessary
can he carried to completion in
that area. It is the policy of the
Highway Board to use native
plants for the beautification of the
roads. There will be a few excep
tions, such as Crepe Myrtle and
Cherokee Rose, which are not na
tive to Georgia, but due to time
and suage ahve become firmly es
tablished as typical of this state.
Every effort will be made to em
phasize the natural beauty of the
landscape traversed by the roads
and to cover unsightly places nec
essarily made by road construc
tion.
