W. F. McElreath Beverage]
Company, Athens distributors for
Schlitz beer, product of the Joseph
Schlitz Brewing Company, has
been advised of plans of the cpm
pany to spend well over $1,000,000
in plant renovation, additions and
new equipment in Milwaukee.
Beer storage tanks figure prom
inently in the expansion program,
and the contract for these tanks
was awarded to A. O. Smith Cor
poration, and is described by
Smith engineers as the Ilargest
single order of its Kkind ever
placed. 2
Storage capaciby will be brought |
back to ‘the all-time peak levels
established in 1914. The material
increase in yearly output will ben
efit growers of barley and other
ingredients going into the manu-|
facture of beer, will provide jobs|
in construction and plant reno-i
vation and will eventually in
crease employment at the plantl
proper.
Currently, Schlitz emploves ahout|

considered a slack prodaction

The largest single item in the
expansion program thus far an-‘
§nounced is an order for $400,000
worth of glass lined beer storage‘
‘tanks, awarded last week to the‘
'A. ©O. Smith corporation, out of‘
a field of eight nationally promi
nent bidders. ‘
Largest Order Ever |
Smith engineers describe the
award as the largest single order
of jts kind ever placed. It calls
for 162 tanks and will give the
lbrewery an additional capacity of
1100,000 barrels.
, The Schlitz stockhouse on the
corner of Walnut and Third
'streets has already been wrecked
| to make way for 4 new structure;
the stockhouse on the corner of
Galena and Third streets is un
der reconstruction. The one build
ing was taken down, as the max
imum number of tanks could not
be gotten in. The other building
will lend itself to the installation
of the new tanks.
The new storage building will
be six stories high, although in
| side there will be only three
floors, the intermediate tanks to
' be serviced from walks suspend
l ed from the ceiling. It is no long

A Big Drink of Beer ‘
The new Smith tank’s, ranging
in diameter up to 11 feet and in
length up to 40 feet, are to be in
stalled in January, February and
March of next year.
Based on the new tanks being
filled three times a year—which
would allow each batch of beer
four months in whi¢h to age—
this additional Schlitz capacity
would produce over 120,000,000 10-
ounce glasges of beer, or enoxfh
to give everyone in the United
States a good drink, officials say.
Placed end ty end, the new tanks,
with an average diameter of 10 1-2
feet, would be just a trifle more
than 10 times =asg high as the
Washington monument.
