Atlanta staged eight brilliant
dances at the principal clubs un
der an arrangement by which one
ticket was good for admission to
[a]l the celebratione.
~ Augusta observed the occasion
with three balls, while two were
held at fashionable Sea Island,
near Brunswick. It was one of
the latter that had the $5 tickets.
The spacious Macon guditorium
was the scene of that city’s ball.
Savannah residents celebrated in
one of the leading hot2is and at
Kingsland, in southeast Georgia,
dancers braved the weather by
gathering in the Municipal stad-‘
ium.
Among the numerous other cities
joining in the festivities were Val
dosta, Milledgeville, ' Statesboro,
Dalton, Fitzgerald, Thomasville,
Cordele, Eatonton, Douglas, Bruns
wick, Cartersville, Barnesville and
Elberton. 1

| The mercury fell to 5 degrees
above zero in Atlanta today as a
cold wave, the worst of the winter
lut many points, brought below
freezing weather throughout the
state,
Savannah, on the south Georgia
coast had a reading of 24 degrees
this morning.
| ‘Coming after an 8-inch snow in
Atlanta Wednesday and Thursday,
this morning’'s b6-degree tempera
ture brought a coating of ice to
streets that disrupted vehicular
traffic, and made walking hazard
ous. It was a new low mark for
Ithe winter in Atlanta, which has
had its worst January weather in
vears.
Columbus reported a low of 18,
This tied the previous low mark
of the winter, set a few days ago.
Macon reported a low of 17,
Augusta, 'with the reading, said
this was the coldest of the winter,
Snow still covered Augusta and
jmost other sections of the state
| from Macon north. :
Moultrie reported a low of 22
and “plenty of ice.”
Athens had eight degrees, the
low for the season. 3
Thomasville reperted 22 and
{ Brunswick 27.
20 Negro Convicts

EYE-WITNESS ‘
ARKANSAS CITY, Kas.—Motor
ist Lang Fullinger saw a child|
hurled from an automobile to the
pavement in front of his car.
The sight shocked him into un
consciousness that lasted three
days. A resultant nervous collapse
left him blind.
‘The child was not hurt.
In spending three days at a
modern metropolitan hotel. the
average gue:t is served by at least]

Services For Mrs.
Pierce to Be Held
Saturday at 3:30
Mrs, Elsie Paulona Pierce, 68
wife of the late D. L. Pierce, died
at her home im-High Shoals Thurs
day afternoon at 3:36 o’clock, after
an illnesg of 9 days. Funeral serv
ices will be held from High Shoals
Baptist church Saturday and in
terment will be in High Shoals
cemetery with Bernstein Funeral
Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers are R. L. Whaters,
Herman Stowe, Clarence Stowe,
Joe Dickerson, Fambro Tidwell and
Henry Thomas. Mrs. Pierce was
born in Jackson county and had
been living in High Shoals for one
year. She died at the home of her
son, . N. Pierce at High Shoals.
Mrs. Pierce is :yrvived by four
daughters, Mrs. J. E. Deaton, At
lanta; Mrs. D. L. Smith, High
Shoals; Mrs. Luther Williams, At
lanta and Mrs. Mattie Gibson,
Sparta; two sons, H. A. Pierce,
Birmingham, Ala.; and PFP. N.
Pierce, High Shoals. Also one
sister, Mrs. R. L. Tolbert, of At
lanta and one brother, Wiley
Mangum of Austin, Texas. She is
also survived by 7 great grand
children and 17 grand children.
Mrs. Pierce was a beloved christi
an woman and leaves many friends
who will regret to learn of her
death . -
