Georgia’'s courtmen captured

in order for either of the teams3s

Alligators and Bulldogs are dead

Left Fielders In Major
Loop Are Heavy Hitters
Outside of First Base,
More Batting Power Is
Found in Leftfielders
By ALAN GOULD
Associated Press Sports Editor
NEW YORK-—(#)—A big chunk
of the batting power being sought
by major league ball clubs for the
coming pennant putsch should be
generated by the broad-shoudered
boys of the left field patrol. Out
side of first base, ng other posi
tion seems to carry so much
clouting ability.
Among the National ILeague's
guardians of left field there are
such leadoff nitters as Joe Moore
of the New York Giants and For
rest Jensen of the Pittsburgh Pi
rates, and such cleaner-uppers as
Joe Medwick of the St Louis
Cardinals, Babe Herman of the
Cincinnati Reds and George Wat
kins of the Phillies.
All except Watkins were _in the
.300 class most of last '.&vnson
Medwick at .358 was the runner
up to shortstop Arky Vaughan of
the Pirates for league batting
‘honors.
~ Over in the American League
ranks there's an egually potent)
crew, led by Cleveland's Joe Vos
mik, who had the batting cmwn‘
apparently all wrapped up last
September, until Buddy Myer o(l
‘the Senators came along and
‘snatched it away by a one-point
'margln.
Vosmik tops a left-field list in
cluding the durable Goose Goslin
who supplied the winning World
Series blow for the Detroit Tig
ers; Heinie Manush, obtained to
fiil the job vacated by Roy John
gon in the Red Sox untfield; Juli
us Solters, a sensation with the
St. Louis Browns; Ray Radelifl
of the Chicago White Sox; and
Bob Johnson, one of the few reg
uars left on the roster of the Ath
letics.
The New York Yankees probas
bly will install Roy Johnson, ob
tained by way of Washington, in
left field.
To fill Manush's place, Wash«
ington likely will use Carl Rey
nolds, rated a great spring hitter.
The only left field jobs in doubt |
in National League company, in
volve Brooklyn and Boston. Botb
clubs contemplate such a shake
up that it's jmpossible to say who
will get the assignments.
Hal Lee figures to be the first
choice among the Bees but Gene
Moore, just obtained from Brook
lyn, is a contender.
The Dodgers tried a half dozen
in the spot last season, including
Jimmy Bucher, Dan Taylor, Col
onel Mills and Johnny Cooney. All
will be back for the melee thie
gpring at Clearwater, Fla. |

invaders will enter tonight's tilt
with everything in their favor.
