A study: of. consumer purchases
will soon begin in Clarke county,
conducted by the breau of home
economics of the U. S. department
of ztgt'i(:ulttxl'e. Mrs, Mary Morgan
Smith will _be in charge of the
work in this community, and she
or one Of Hér assistants will wvisit
some -67 -oor -more - families - here
during the ?ext few weeks to get
this information for what might be
called a cata.;ogue of family purch

This loeal'*survey is part of a
nation-wide ‘study of what con
sumers buy. = Such information is
necessary as a basis for measuring
changes in the cost of living from
one period 40 another and will also
be useful "for various other pur
poses to business and' labor groups,
consumers, ‘an#d civic organizations.
At the same time it will aid state
and federal agencies in planning
and carrying 'on their work.
Typical. families over -all the
Wnited States will be asked to con
gribute information for this study,
and the results from different sec
tions of the ‘country and different
population groups will be analyzed
and compared. What doeg a fam
ily buy, for eample, when it has
SI.OOO a year or less? When it has
$2,500 a year or $5,000 a year, and

Reese Fleemidn and Carl Paynex
both pleaded guilty to possessing
whiskey, and were fined $l5O and
sentenced to 12 months, on proba
tion. y
Vesterday afternoon, the [jury
found E. W. Reynolds ‘g#filty on
charges of violating the motor ve
hicle law. Reynolds was involved|
in a wreek at the corner of Hill‘
street and Milledge avenue, and
was prosecuted by J. P, Sullivun.!
In November court, the same case|
was declared a mistrial. Reynolds |
was fined SIOO by Judge Tuck. ‘
Alton Williams was found not
guilty on charges of violating the‘
motor vehicle law of leaving an
accident without giving his name|
and ‘addeess, fnd Tommy Sutton,l
Negro, was”feund guiity of speed
ing, driving ° without headlights |
failing to slow up when approach- |
ing a bridge, but Judge Tuck did |
not pass sentence this morning. |
Sutton was charged with hitting
a horse owned hy Everett Patman,
injuring it so. badly it was neces
sary to kill the animal.

J. W. Spratlin, 52,
At Hull Residence
Funeral services were held this
afternoon for J. William Spratlin,
52, who died at his residence in
Hull, Ga., Tuesday morning about
10 o’clock.
The services were held at the
residence, conducted:by Rev. A, E,
Logan, pastor ofs Hull Baptist
church, assisted by Rev. R. M,
Jennings, Baptist pastor, Inter
ment was in Hart cemetery, Mc-
Dorman-Bridges in charge of ar
rangements.
Surviving Mr. Spratlin are his,
wife, Mrs. Nellie Hart Spratlin;
three daughters, Misses Will Nell,
Garleta and Geneva Spratlin, all of
Hull; two sons, Jewett and Floyd
Spratlin, both of Hull; a sister,
Mrs. T. A. Burroughs, Hull; three
brothers, Bent T. D, P,, and Wal
ter J. Spratlin, all of Hull and an
uncle, T. S. Spratlin, Atlanta.
Mr. Spratlin was the son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Pope Spratlin |
and a ‘member of one of the most
respected and widely known fami
lies in Madison county,
For some weeks he had been in
failing health and early Tuesday
he announced he was goingt to see
about some wood. When he failea
to return for dinner a search was
made and he was found dead sev
eral hundred yards from the house,
a pistol in his hanas.
An inquest was held and the ver
dict of the coroner’s jury was sui
cide. lovidence gathered at the in
quest disclosed that Mr. Spratlin
had become gquite melancholy overl
his failing health, and it wa.si
thought he brooded over this until
he shot himself. I
