“Covering and writing about the
Hauptmann trial is about the most
interesting experience I've had since
I've been in the newspaper game,”
Arthur “Bugs” Baer told this re
porter Thursday. Mr. Baer is the
famous Hearst columnist who gpoke
at the recent Press Institute.
Whtson Davis, Science Service
editor, gave an answer similar to
that of “Bugs” Baer when asked
the question, “What is the most
interesting or exciting experience
you have had in your career as
editor of Science Service?”
“The covering of the Scopes evo
lution trial in Tennessee in 19256
was most interesting,” he said. |
“And while'a member of the
Naval Observatory I had an unus
ual experience when. in the dirix:i-;
ble Los Angeles, T flew over Long|
island and witnessed a total eclipse
of the sun,” Mr. Davis remarked. ‘
“Believe It or Not,” the most in
teresting experience of Webb Miller,

has not been the seeing of the war |
“1 was most excited and thrilled
on Armistice Day, November 11,
1918, when I was in Europe cover
ing the World War,” Mr. Miller
laughingly stated. “That |is my |
most memorable experience.” |
Dr. John J, Tigert, president of |
the University of Florida, said after
his Washington Day addresg in th(“
University chapel that “being :11)«‘
pointed a Rhodes scholar to Oxford
was the turning point in my car
eer. If I hadn't gone to Oxford 7
most probably wouldn't be in the
educational field.” he continued. |
These were the varied replies
given by three veteran journalists
and a prominent educator.
