introduced an amendment to the
Hayvden-Cartwright highway ace
which wag passed This :mn‘nd—'
ment gives the secretary of agri
culture the authority to «deal with
counties, in allocation of funds for
farm-to-market roads.
The action of the senate follow
ed a conference with the Georgia
congressional delegation in which
{Mr. Wright and a large number of
(Georgia county commissioners took
part several days ago
The Associated Press dispatch
announcing the successful passage
{of the Russell-George amendment
follows
ADOPT AMENDMENT
WASHINGTON—(®P)—An amend
ment by Senator Russell, Democrat,
Georgia, to the Hayden-Cartwright
highway bill permitting direct deal
|ing with counties instead of state
‘hi;h\\ 1y boards in distribution of
i federal fundg for farm-to-market
{roads bore the approval of the sen
late Saturday.
The amendment would apply oniy
during the fiscal year ending June
30, 1937, and Russell said it 4voula
have no effect on funds now being
withheld from Georgta by the Bur
eau of Public Roads because of a
controversy over the office of state
treasuler
If the house accepts it, however,
Gleorgia would be assured of its
allocation of the fund set up for
secondary roads after July 1 of this
vear. The bill would provide $25,5-
000,000 annually for the next twe
lvears for farm-to-market roads.
i Georgia law prohibitg acceptance
of federal money by the state high
way board unless it comes through
the state treasurer’'s office, which
has been in dispute since Governor
Talmadge took over control of
'Georgia’s financeg several months
ago
The $488,000,000 national high
way measure was ready Saturday
for conference on minor amend
ments after guick senate approval.
The bill calls for federal expend!-
| tures during the fiscal years 1938
and 1939 for forest highways, roads
and trails; public land highways,
parkways, Indian reservation roads
isecondary or feeder roads and the
elimination of grade crossings
i On all except the grade cross
ing worlk., a $50.00¢.000 item. the
states would be reguired to match
