The nickname, “Bojangles,” inci

Des Williams long after he had
become a successful entertainer.
They called him “Laughing Kid'
during his Richmond days.
He headed north when he was
eight. He paused in Washington
and became a stable boy. Then
he met the late and the not-to-be
forgoften Eddie Leonard " one
night and the minstrel man pro
posed that they form a dancing
team. They secured an engage

hearsed.
It was at the Lawrence that
Gertrude Hoffman, the choreo
grapher, watched the colored ooy
perform and signed him up for a
musical show, “The South Before
the War.” That was nearly fifty
years ago, and “Bojangle's” pay
was $5 per week in addition to
lodgings. When the show closed,
he jeined-a couple of floorshows
in Chicago for not much better
pay, then stranded himself iu
Boston.
Fast Afoot
For lack of a better occupation
he joined the track team of the
South PBoston Athletic club and
won a sprinter's post on the
Olympics team. The Jesse Owens

But he went with the team to
England and on His Majesty’s soil
first demonstrated his strange tal

them at a distance. Now, at 55,
“Bojangles” can still run back

and is willing to challenge any
champion sprinter in such a meect
today. He offers lesser opponents
a 25-yard handicap, besides. No

“Bojangles of Harlem” for advice
In fifty years, Bill Robinson nu=s
probebly appeared on almost
every big vaudeville stage in tae
country, in numerous all-negro
musicals and countless floor
shows. His last Hollywood job
was in a film with Shirley Tem

tant to accept the pay. Miss Tem
ple is his favorite cinema star.
Toast of Broadway
At 58, he continues to look 35,
His dapper wardrobe, they say,
fills three clothes elosets which,
after breaking down the partie
tions, would be the size of a cou
ple of living rooms. He stiil main
tains a crease in each pair of
trousers, offstage and on, that i 3
sharp enough to cut capers while
he is dancing. He is the highest
paid negro entertainer in 4
world, exceeding the income of
even Josephine Baker during bher
Paris heydays. For his night clulf
work, he gets $3,000 per week.
In Harlem he is “head man.”
And certainly he is Harlem'

The celebration of his 50th anni

the greatest demonstration that
Broadway staged for an eminent
Harlemite.
From every niche of stag®,
screen, radio, sports and societ¥

“Bojangles” to pay their respec's
and join in the celebration.
