CITES OPPORTUNITY
TO AID COMMUNITY
Speaking before the Rotary
club Wednesday, D. Weaver
Bridges, past president, point
ed out the opportunities pre
cented members to help build
the community through con
tact with the young men of
Athens.
Bridges Speaker
To Rotarians
At Luncheon Meet
l Speaking to the Athens Rotary
Club at the Georgian hotel yester
lday. D. Weaver Bridges, past
president of the local club, remind
ed members of the opportunities
being presented to them every day
to help build the community
Ithrough contact with the young
men of . Athens.
l Crime among the youth of the
community is very slight in this
|eity Mr. Bridges pointed out and
lig ag low if not lower than in any
other ecity ip the South of similar
size.
lixplaining the new method of
“farming out” juvenile delinquents,
the speaker showed the advantages
of g system of this kind as com
pared to the effectg of the older
“reformatory” system.
The new system is tp send de
linquents to homes. where they
lwill not be in contact with other
ivouths of criminal tendencies and
‘there to instill in them the right
lway of living,
By thig way, the youth does not
receive any new ideag concerning
crime and his olq ideas are sub
dued :
Taking up the ways in which the
members of the Rotary club could
make this inte a better community
and save some of the youthg who
<will take the wrong path if not
‘guided an/. instructed, Mr. Brid
ges referred to the 91 senior boys
who will be graduated this year
from the local high school.
! Urges Companionship
Hardly a member in the club
would know the nameg of ten of
the 91 bhoys, the speaker pointed
out. If every man would try to
know the youth of the city and
try to he pals wtin them and really
%know them, t.en some honest
good could result from the com
panionship, the speaker said. ;
“If the 75 members of the Ro
tary club would keep in mind the
opportunity they have to aid some
boy whose troubles, though slight
to the older man, are mountains to
‘the youth, the youth of the whole
city could be helped,” the speaker
concluded.
The meeting was the regular
weekly meeting of the club and
sam Nickerson, president, presid
ed. Tour visitors, Julius Talmadge,
Athens; A Berkson, New Orleans;
'Parl Leivis. Atlanta, and Clyde
Teasley, Elberton, were present.
' A report on the newly elected di
rectors and the newly appointed
officers was given and Dr. Pope
Holliday gave a report on the mar
ble tournament which the club ie
