Attack On T
Cruiser Columbia
WASHINGTON, D. C. — The
Navy disclosed Saturday that ihe
light cruiser Columbia, veteran
of Pacific battles, was hit by a
Japanese bomb in the Philippine
campaign, but is back in action.
Casualties totaled 184, of whom
60 were Kkilled, the Navy said.
The cruiser put back to sea after
a visit t¢ the Terminal Islana
Cal., naval drydock, where &n
average of 875 workers spent 77
days repairing her wounds,
Hit by a large bomb on the
main deck while engaged in shore
‘bombardment prion to the Linga
yen landings, the Columbia stuck
’to her posy for three days until
lthe beaches were secure.
~ She saw action at Guadalca
nal, Rennel Island, New Georgia,
Rendova, Treasury, Bougainville,
Empresg Augusta andPalau be
fore being disabled. At Leyte
she helped over the Sixth Army
landings.
Then came the Lingayen Gulf
action, beginning January 6, In
mid afternocon of the first day,
two ‘“Zekes” came out of
the clouds to sirafe and bomb.
One, although hit and burning,
crashed close aboard. Gasoline
sprayed over the ship, but
prompt action prevenied serious
fires. In late afternoon a “Val”
scored a hit, and resulting fires
put half of the ship’s main bai
tery out of action. :
QM 2-c Fred Davison, son of
Mrs. Glagdys B. Davison, has
been a member of the Columbia’s
crew since the ship was commis
sioned in 1942. He was home for
30 days last February while the
cruise” was ugdergoing repairs.
Fred has two brothers in the
Navy; Wilfred 8., ARM 11-¢, now
in the Aleutians ,and Ensign
James H. Davison, of the Navy
Supply Corps School, Harvard
University. By a strange coinci
dent, Fred’s cruiser took part in
the shore bombardment prior o
two landings made by his broth
er-inlaw’s outfit, Major Ulysses
G. Carlon, of the 37th Division.
Both Fred and Major Carlan
knew each other’s vthereabots.

(Continued from page one.)
Union (unaffiliated) they would
lose retroactive pay benefits of a
new contract as well as the
closed shop and preferential hir
ing provisions.
Wage increases, however, are
not a major issue in the dispute.
Brig. Gen. Julius Ochs Adler,
vice-president and general mana
ger of the New York Times, said
in a radio broadcast that the
strikers were ‘“deliberately mis
led” by their leaders.
