PFC. DAVID D. HUTCHINS
HAS THRILLING STORY
WITH THE 33RD . DIVISION
ON LUZON — Pfe. David D.
Hutchins, husband of Mrs. Mag
gie Hutchins, Rt. No. 2 Athens,
Ga., can tell one of the most
thrilling stories to come out of
the drive for Baguio in Nortnern
Luzon. Pfe. Hutchins.is an am
munition carrier fort a machine
gun section' of Company *C”,
136th Infantry, 33rd Division.
Pfs. Hutchins' -company was
attacking a Jap strong point on
a ridge line east of Baguio, with
the mission of diverting the Jap
forces while two other companie<
took another part of the ridge.
The plan was successiul, and ie
ridge taken as planned. Thé Japs
had evidently exwmected the direc
tion of the attack at the poini
of Company C’s thrust and the
full force of the Jap defense was
spent on Company C.
The Japs were waiting in am
bush. As the main body of Com
pany C reached the top of the
ridge, the Japs opened up with
a deadly blast of fire from all
directions. There was scant cov
er from the hail of slugs and
knee mortar shells. The Japs had
every advantage of position.
Withdrawal war ordered. The
diversionary purpose of the
mission was accomplished.
The only route for withdrawal
from the deadly fire lay over a
thirty-foot bluff, down _ which
the men jumped or fell. They
were under fire for several hun
dred® yards. The distance had to
be coveredq by moving rapidly
from cover to cover. Courege
and heroism were the keynotes
of that day. The valiant self
sacrifice of Company C will live
long in the annals of the 136tk
Infantry.
Pfe. Hutchins was near the top
of the ridge with the machine
gun section leader when the iir
ing started. He returned the fire
as best he could until the order
to move off the ridge camp up.
He than .assisted in removing &s
many wounded men as he could.
