Roy Harris Expects
'To Be In 1946
Gubernatorial Race
AUGUSTA, Ga., July 27—(#)—
Roy V. Harris, Speaker of the
House, said today he expects to
be a candidate for governor in
1946 and that if he runs “it won't
make any difference whether there
are two or 40 in the race.”
The speaker thus summed up
what he considered his chances
against the field in next year’s
campaign but declared it was too
|early now to make a formal an
nouncement of his candidacy.
Harris successfully opposed re
vision of the Constitution to per
mit Governor Ellis Arnall to offer
for re-election. The Governor and
'Speaker exchanged harsh words
!after a special session of the legis
lature refused to submit to the
people an amendment permitting
a successive term for the chief
executive. '
Arnall has not given up hope
the legislature may “fix it for
me.” He told a meettnig of the
Cherokee Bar Association in Chat
tanooga recently that he might
be a candidate if the law is
changed.
At the same time Arnall spoke
a good word for former Governor
E. D. Rivers. The two have been
appearing on the same platforms
in behzlf of the new State Con
istitution. At the Chattanooga
!meeting Arnall termed Rivers the
state’s “first modern governor.”
Rivers, often mentioned as a
candidate again in 1946, also takes
the position its too early to say
anything definite about his plans.
Delacey Allen, Albany attorney
and former American Legion com
mander in Georgia, has already
thrown his hat into the ring. Most
observers expect former Governor
I Eugene Talmadge to be in the race.
