personal letters to citizens urging
them to vote for bonds. Mayor
MecWhorter pointed out that- un
der the law the polls in Athens
can be open only between the
hours of 9 a. m. and 4 p. m,, and
Board Member Huggins, express
ing the opinion that “we have the
votes, if we can get them to the
polls, pointed out -that we must
poll at the rate of approximately
300 votes per hour if we reach
our goal.” ;
Under the law governing bond
elections, it will be necessary tc
poll 51 percent of the registered
voting list in Athens, which to
tals a little more than 3,000 votes.
A committee was appointed tc
have tags printed with the words
“I Have Voted” printed on them.
Each citizen will be given a tag
indicating he has voted, after he
goes to the polls -and casts his
vote.
School principals and teachers
reported the students in all of the
schools are helping in every way
possible to keep their parents and
others informed of the necessity
of going to the polls and voting,
if the bonds are to be approved.
Erincipal Wood reported that one
student in High School qhad been
told by the head of an industrial
concern here, that he would per
mit his employes to go to the
polls in groups and vote.
Vote Before Leaving
In the resolution urging citi
zens to “sacrifice a little if neces
sary to help carry this bond elec
tion,” the meeting also urged em-~
ployers to let their employes off
long enough during the day to go
to the polls. This was emphasized
as important because of the short
voting hours—only seven hours
in which to roll up 2,000 votes.
Citizens who plan to be out of
town next Tuesday are urged to
stay home long enough to vote
Tuesday morning. A large num-~
ber of people usually are out of,
town every day and “we can lose
this bond election if citizens will
not stay here until 9 o’clock to
vote, before going away,” it was
declared. There is no.law permit

Again Defies WLB
Directives On Union
(Continued from page one.)
WLB had ordered Wards to put
into a contract then under nego
tiation - a maintenance of mem
bership clause, but Avery refused.
He maintained the WLB orders
were merely advisory and not
binding,
Likewise, Avery has contended
that seizure of the properties was
illegal. When the government first
took control for two weeks in
April, 1944, Avery refused to sur
render his office to Department of
Commerce officials and was car
ried to the street by two soldiers.
Charge Justice Miscarriage
Samuel Wolchok, union presi
dent, said ‘the union would ask
Wards to hold public negotiations,
and he asked that Avery partici
pate. He said that the Army with
drawal without payment of $785,-
089.70 in back wages was a “seri
ous and gross miscarriage of jus
tice.” i ;
| The retroactive pay from De
cember, 1942, to December, 1944,
was awarded workers by the WLB,
Maj. Gen. David McCoach, ijr.,
War Department representative,
who had been in charie of gov
ernment operations of the Chicago
company, said the Army did not
make the payments because the
money was earned prior to Army
occupation.
