MILLION DOLLAR JEWEL ROBBERY IN
HONG KONG BARES STRANGE STORY
BY HAL DOYLE
HONG KONG, Jau. 24 —(AP)
—Thig crown colony’s first post

has bared a strange tale of mix.
ed generosity and revenge: It
could hdppen only in the Orient,
where . time moves so_slowly
that 3 man can fee: free to de

for an affront.
The. story was told today in a
long letter to all Hong Kong
iNwspapers by the robbery vic
tim aimself — Tan Tong Hoe, a
wealthy Chinese dealer in dental
supplies. '
The jewelry — vauled roughly
at a,million- Hong Kong dollars
or more than 200006 American
dollars — was stolen from' his
home last week by three ban
dits during his abscnce.
Explaining the source. of ‘is
wealth, Tan wrote:
“About eight yearg ago while
I was a resident 'in Singapore, I

was almost in a pocition to seek
his revenge when ttie war: broke
out and forced him to shlexe
his plan temporarily. Fearing
curreney deflation, ne, invested
most of his wealth in diamonds.
“Unfortunately, that:man has
sipce died during the Japaness
occupation,” Tan: continued, “and
consequently: I am now deprived
of the‘chance to avenge that
grievance since he undoubtedly
would be unable to see for him
self what I' would *be deing.” -
Deprived of his personal ven
geance, Tan brooded leng over!

Tan pointedy emphasized that
his gift does not svring from
