Report 0f City Department Says

Typhus fever is invading North Georgia and has become a major
health problem here, according to the annual report of the Depart
ment of Health. Eight definite and two suspcious cases were reported
in Clarke county last week.

Department inspected 626 dairies,
and food establishments, tested
970 cows, and examined 5,482 ani-’
mals. Thirty dairies are register
ed for supervision, and the urban
milk supply is 100 per cent grade

Believeing that education is the
rfoundation of a sound health pro
gram, the Department last year
distributed 3,658 bulletins, and |
published 14 newspaper articles. |

is, to familiarize obth public of

the detailed activities of the De

two-fold: eficiency and economy.
Every effort is made to render
cfficient 'service to the medical
;profession as well as to the gen

partment are bought through eom
petitve bids from reputable firms,
and economy practiced in every
‘detail compatible with efficiency.

The report concludes with a
statement of .immediate needs of

service.

ty life except in public health
services. .

;educational opportunities in Ath-i
ens and Clarke County are inad-.
quate, and have done something |
definite and constructive about |
' the situation.
“Our people have realized that
i paved streets and good roads are
essential to progress and are do
ing something about it.
i “The majority of our people
‘have not yet fully recognized the
| necessity for expansion of public
'health service and therefore
gnothing definite has been done or
iplanned to improve the standards
,of health services available to
| residents of, Clarke County.
| “The local Health Department
ineeds more adequate and acces
| sible housing ana physical equip
ment. The Department is using
the some quarters used twenty
Iyears ago. The volume of services
rendered has increased many fold.

staff, deplated by war and resig
nations is ont adequate to meet
demands made upon the Depart
ment.” .
Dr. Brown submitted the report
to the Athens and Clarke County
Board of Health, of which Dr. C.
O. Welchel is chairman. Other
members of the obard are Mrs.
T. F. Green, secreiary; Mrs. D. F.
Miller; and Dr. E. B. Hudson.
