. Causes Albuminuria
; By WILLIAM A. O'BRIEN, M. D.
4 Tall, thin adolescents and
| young persons with poor muscu
i jar tone who pass albumin in
their urine might have postural
albuminuria. Albumin enters the
urine through the kidneys as the
result of irritation or infeetion of
the kidney or from faulty pos
ture.
Normal urine contains traces of
albumin too small to be detected
by ordinary tests. When a sam
ple of urine is poured over con-~
centrated nitric acid in a test
iube, and a white ring forms at
the junciion ¢f the acid and the
urine, abnormal amounts of alq‘j
bumin are present. If urine isi
mixed with acetic acid and heat~|
ed, and a white precipitate forms,
it also indicates excessive albu-'
min, In the past, many persons’

believed that albumin in the
urine meant .disease of the kid
ney, but there are several other
causes, especially in young per
sons. ¢
' Albumin may be. detected in
the urine after severe exercise,
mental strain, or prolonged ex-.
posure to cold, but the common
est variety seen in tall young per
sons is caused, by disturbance in
circulation of theé: kidnéy from

{ Albuminuria Tests
’ When postural albuminuria is
| suspected, the patient is tested by
ikeeping him in bed, which causes,
"the albumin to disappedar. As
soon as he sits or stands the
| albumin reappears. The amount
of albumin in the urine in postu
ral albuminuria can be increased
by placing a broomstick across
the small of the back and hook
ing the elbows behind it to push
the <pine forward.

ways associated with normal kid
neys. The condition completely
disappears as the . person grows
older and improves his muscular
strength, nutrition and posture.
Albumin which appears in the
urine following an attack of sore
throat results from inflammation
of the kidneys (nephritis). The
- Serns and their toxins circnlate
' through the blood and cause the
kidney infection. Dropsy in ne
phritis results from failure of!
eénough water to leave the system
through the urine. This variety
of kidney trouble also has a ten
dency toc occur in young persons.
Insurance companies have
learned by experience that appli
cants who have albumin in their
urine are poorer risks than those
who have normal urine, but this
does not mean that everyone in
the group is suffering with a seri
ous kidney disorder.
Examination of the urine is al
ways included in a general check=
up. Promoters of health schemes
may urge persons to submit{ their
firine to them for cxaminaticn!
and corrective measures. This
kind of health examination is not
of value as the result of a urine
examination must be interpreted
by the physician who ‘makes a
complete physical examination of
the patient,

Gives Opposition |
To Maierial Qutpuf
WASHINGTON, March 27.—
(AP) — Housing Boss Wilson W.!
Wyatt’'s renewed plea for subsi
dies to spur the ouput of scarce
building materials bumped into
opposition today from the United
States Chamber of Commerce.
A statement by the Chamber’s
board of directors said “we do
not believe the highly controver-‘
sial subsidy proposal should be re
inserted” in the mieasure (‘::*.signm‘l!
to provide 2,700,000 new homes
by the end of next year. |
The Chamber endorsed the bill
passed by the House, saying in a
stateraent prepared for the Sen
ate Banking Committee that it
gives Wyatt “ample authority.”
i Emergency Appropriation
Elsewhere on the housing front,
the House by a vote of 355 to 1
sent to the Senate a $253,727,000
emergency appropriation bill. It
is intended to finance 102,530
more temporary homes for veter
ans and provide funds for the
civilian production administration
and other agencies to carry out
| the administration’s housing pro
| gram for the balance of the cur
rent fiscal year. Prompt Senate
!’ concurrence was predicted.
| Meanwhile, the OPA rushed to
get its new regional offices oper
ating in 71 key cities to admin
ister and police the far-reaching
construction controls announced
} yesterday. :

A spokesman for the agency
said it was hoped that all would
be ready for business by tornor
row at the latest.
Obtain Machinery, Equipment
In another rapid follow-up, the
agency was expected to grant
“reconversion priorities” today to
help 'manufacturers of scarce
building materials obtain needed
machinery and equipment. »
This action would permit mak
ers ot.all 13 of -the critically
scarce {gaterials and supplies to
expand thei operations and thus
sneed up home building.
The materiais'to be affected, a
CPA official said, are lumber,
bricks, radiators, bathtubs, tile,
concrete blocks, castiron _sewer

gypsum board and lath, hardwood
flooring, - plywood and prefabri
