MacPhail's Highhanded
Tactics “Catching Up”
By GAYLE TALBOT
TAMPA, Fla., March 28— (AP)—Retribution is setting in gradually
in the case of the New York Yankees and the two-third system—.
whieh Larry MacPhail sprang upon an unsuspecting Grapefruit Cir
cuit this spring.
_ The Yankees themselves now
are enmeshed in a very awkward
situation, one entailing=a more
than 400-mile overnight bus trip
between Daytona Beacn, Fla., and
Charleston, S. C.,, for the lesser
of their training teams, and they
are very unhappy about it. Every
body else is enjoying a hearty
chuckle.
The facts are thesc. The Yan
kee Bradenton or ‘‘second” team
iz scheduled to play Brookiyn
today and tomorrow at Daytona
Beach, and then to play the same
Brooklyns the next day, Satur
day at Charleston, which is .‘l‘
‘long way up the Atlantic
Coastline, especially by bus, ‘
The Yankees, just awakening '
to what is to about to befali|
one of <%aeir wandering squads
of athletes, suggesied yeslvrdayl
at St. Petersburg that the Fri
day game a Daytona be cancell- ’
ed. “Maybe we won’t play it,”’
said Arthur Patterson, traveling
secretary of the Yanis.
g “You'll Play N!”
“Maybe you wou't play it?” |
replieq Manager Leo Durnch(*rl
with considerable bite. “You'll
play it, pal, and like it. The com- |
missioner doesn’t like teams that
break playing dates. Not only
will you play it. but I'll send
half my team up to Charleston
on, Thursday so ticy wili bed
good and resteq for your boys
when they get there.”
General Manager Warren Giles
of the Cincinnati Rcds saw red
first when the Bradenton aggre
gation came here for two games. |
Feeling taey owed an obligation |
to Tampa fans, th: Reds warned
them in glaring letters in thg‘
papersg that the Yankees they
would see in action were not
the real McCoy.
Roger Peckinnaugh. vice pres
ident of tiie Cleveland Indians,
also rose in arms when e learn-*
ed the Bradenton sccondestring:
ers were to open the exhibition |
campaign at Clearwater, but rain
averted what might have been
an open break at that time.
“« The refusal of the Brooklyn
eclub to cancel the game at Day
hona Beach tomorrow, or even
. feel sorry for the Yankee Ath
letes who will have to ride a
urching bus all wvight, simply
s a distillation of ihe resentment

Athiens Tennismen
Round Into Shape
The tennis team hasn’t prac
ticed for two days this week as
the court was so wet but Monday
they did some good work and they
have been practiceinb for about a
month and some of the players
even longer. They even practice
on Saturday to get in shape.
Coach Williams hasn’t an
nounced who he. will play in the
matches as singles and doubles
but they are changing around now
so that he may decide. :
Lauren Goldsmith oßbby Brad
berry and Hoke Nash are pretty
good bets for doubles and Bill
Sutton and Lamar Glenn probab
ly will get the call at the singles.
These are not sure positions and
the other players Charles Sorrells
and Donald Burkes haven’t decid

Bill Simpson who was a bright
new prospect to-the team, is lost
as he broke his right arm in an
automobile accident Sunday. |

; DETROIT, March 28—(AP)—|
'The biggest problem in basketbhall
that oi the six foot players who
stand under the haskets and toss |
shots in with ease—is still un-|
‘soved. : '
~ So declared loya Brazil, univer
'sity of Detroit basketball coach, |
‘today as he reviewed recent pro- |
posals to curb activities of tne|
“big fellows” of the basketball
courts. l
| “I don’t think any of the sug
gestions advanced at‘ the '*ecent'
Association rules meeting in New
York would prove very workable,”
Brazil said.
‘Admittedly something must be|
done to equalize things to give the
follows under six feet tal] a
chance, but the big question is
what can we do that won’t harm
the game in some other resperzt?”l
Kurtland, Otten |
“As long as Bob Kurtland of|
Oklahoma A & M, George Mikan
of De Paul and Don Otten of
Bowling Green were around and
scoring a lot of points, there was
bound to be a lot of agitation
against them. They’ll be gone next
season, however, and most of the|
i#reworks ‘will dfsappear,” ‘the |
Detroit Coach added.
Brazil said many coaches favor
widening the free throw lanes, |
but pointed out that such a pro-:
posal would increase the effec
tiveness of the zone defense———!
something the coaches didn’t
want. '
“Basketball right now is one of
the top sports as far as rapid-fire
action is concerned and we want
to keep it that way. That’s why I'd
hate to see teams resort to one de-.
sense, for that”s the dullest thing
in the world for basketball fans,”
Brazil concluded. i
