- Two hours of rioting erupted
- when German police, accompan

Military Police, moved inle the
_camp to search for . counterfeit
ration stamps. First reports indi

to the aid of the displaced per

. Armored Cars Roll Up
The riot ended only when Am="
erican armored cars rolled into
the camp.
About 135 German police, ac
companied by U. S. Military Po

moved into the camp about 6:30
4. m.
A loudspeaker announcement
informed the displaced persons
that a- “black market” raid was
in progress and instructed them
to allow police to. enter homes
which comprise the camp on the
outskirts of this city.
t‘ The German police, however,’
were met by a shower of bricks
iand bottles as they tried to carry
out the search. i
They said they opened fire
after they had been fired on by a
sniper, military government offi
cials asserted, and the Jewish
displaced person was slain.
Immediate Investigation
Colonel’ William W. Dawson ©of
Cleveland, Ohio, military govern
ment officer for the area, ordered
an immediate investigation. :
- Dawson said German police re
quested and were granted per
mission to make the raid by the
First Armored Division, which
controls the area. He said the
riot was not put down until the
original U. S. “token” force was.
substantially reinforced.
