By C. A. Rowland
- In the passing of Mr. L. D.
Conaway this week Athens has
lost a Christidn gentleman and
citizen; his church, Young Harris
Memorial Methodist, a charter
member and a faithful steward of
many years; his associates a real
friend and his family a devoted
father.
Perhaps the outstanding char
acteristic of L. D. Conaway wps

the government, one of the city’s
mail carriers in which service he
was - ever faithful and along his
route counted his friends by ihe
score.
In his christian activities he
was conspicuous for his faithful
ness in his regular church at
tendance. In his closing years
when unable to get about freely
he always looked forward tn]
Sunday, for on that day his greal
joy in life would be redlized,; he:l
would be able to attend the
church service.
He was also for years teacher
of one of the adult classes in
' Sunday School in which he was|
lagain faithful in his preparation
l and attendance. ’
This brief appreciation of L. D.
Conaway would not be complete
without referring to his active
participation in the Athens Busi

which faithfulness was again €X
hibited to a remarkable degree.
He was secretary of the club
for many years and' at the time
the club invited Rev. Jesse M.
Hendley of Atlanta to hold his
’tent meeting in 1939. That meet
ing was perhaps the most suc
cessful and far reaching ever held
in our city. !
“He that is faithful in that
which is least is also faithful in
that which is much.” These
words fully épitomize the life of
my friend.

Nafional Program
{ The Frank E. Mitchell Post in
,Athens of the Veterans of For
leign Wars is fully behind tae
program of the national body
,conducted by Commander-in-
Chief Joseph M. Stack, M. P.
'Hughes, commander of the local
post, said this week.
The gpecial projects which tae
| local post will push, Hughes
}pointed out, will be the assur
‘ance that returninz velerans are
given credit for the time served
when they return to taeir old
job. This is particularly true in
Civil Service rating, where the
veteran was held in a “frozen
grade” status.
“We are endorsing the fight
that Omar B. Ketchum, V. F. W.
national legislative representa
tive, made at tae National Post
war '‘Housing conference in At
lantic City recently.” said Com
mande: Hughes. “Legislative ac
tion is necessary to ensure the
returning that he can provide a
home and that he be given jus
tice in the construction of that
home.”
VFW Commander-in.Caiet
Stack, speaking in Butts, Mont,,
charged members of Congress are
using the veterans' housing crisis
as a “political foothall.” “There
ic ample evidence.” he said, “io
indicate many building contract
ors are using available materials
for construction of homeg which
veterans canhot afford’ to buy.
or for night clubs, juke joints,
racetracks, and other non-essen
tial structures.”
Tihe Athens post of the VFEW
is also working with the nation
al program to lsberalize the Na
tional Service Life ' Insurance
and to give veterans second pri
ority instead of thivd in the pur
chase of surplus property,
Hughes announced.
