This learning session is largely
responsible for the popularity of
the elephant barns at circus
quarters here where Ringling
Brothers and Barnum & Bailey
are preparing for the 1946 sea
son. The sight of a well-turned
leg is always am attraction, al
though some merely go to watch
the elephants blush. Across the
way in a smnenagerie barn a Sibe

than .anyone else. Babe has been

Spring’s design is 1o narrow the waist, bell-curve
the hips, minimize the thigh. So dresses are
belted, jackets are tacked and bowed at the
waist. Peplums flutter, skirts are slim! 9 to 20. .
L
¢lamber up her trunk by the
dozen to pose insecurely upon
her broad head. . .
It’s no fun for the girls either
at first. “I feel as though I’d just
done a week’s washing,” a shape
ly redhead said -as she came,
perspiration-drenched, from her
first two hours with Babe. Babe's
complexion is more sandpaper
than satin and the redhead had
skinned both knees on the way
down. -
However, there: are also remu
nerations. Babe gets an extra
shovelfull of salt, and the girls
this season e’ dragging down
from S9O to s?.{)o Jper week, which
would - not' be peanuts even to
Babe. e
From this it ‘m)ay be gathered
the circus is in the chips again.
There was a time when — stag
gering under the $3,000,000 bur
den of the Hartford fire vietims’
claims plus - acute internal dis
sension among Ringling factions
—it looked as though the big top
might fold. But no more.
The big show came back from
the road last fall with a $6,000,-
000 gross — even after Uncle
Sam’s tax collectors had deducted
their share. It was the biggest
season in. circus history, and the
show’s hardboiled executives are
convinced ’'46 will be even big
ger.
" With this in mind, the circus is
expanding — there will be more
spangles, more glitter, a bigger
big top with more seats. Even
Gargantua kas grown. The show’s
press agents are searching for
superlatives.
Expect 5,000,000
From last year's golden return,
the show earmarked $280,000 for
a new opening spectacle to re
place the wartime “Alice in Cir
cusland” number.” Nature of the
new ‘“spec” is still a top secret
and it would be easier to walk
into the U. S. mint with an empty
suitcas2 than to get into the cos
tume department where its prop
erties are being designed.
Ringling Brothers and Barnum
& Bailey expect to play to near
ly 5,000,000 Americans this year
in its six weeks in New York's
Madison Square Garden and 300
under~canvas performances The
new big top now under construc
tion here will be 540 feet long,
240 feet wide, and will seat 11,-
500 persons. Heavy fireproofed
canvas is being used, and ail
seais .are of steel. The show is
iaking no chances of a recurrence
of the Hartiosd disaster, which in
addition® to ifs heavy monetary
loss also sent several highly es
sential executives to jail.
Emphasis this year will be
largely on aerial acts. 'The end
of the war in Europe has made it
possible again to import talent
from the continent and Ringling
dollars effectively skimmed the
cream from circuses in Sweden,
Spain, Italy and Belgium. Also in
England, scouts discovered Adam,
a white-faced performing chim
panzee who reportedly once es
caped in a blackout and ‘caused
no small amount of consternation
by rollerskating around the
houses of Parliament. And the
pre-wir - 60-girl aerial ballet is
back. :
To transport all this, the cir
cus has added 20 more railroad
cars, bringing its total rolling
stock up to« 100 cars. Small boys
from coast to coast will have no
difficulty spotting them. They are
painted bright red.
Louisiana has been an independ
ent state twice—for 10 months
after revolt against Spanish rule
in 1769, and far six weeks afer
secession from the union before
oining the Confederacy in 1861.
